I used one of those shorter ones from heritage on a previous squareback resto a few years ago, it was a pretty good fit if i remember but only covers the door opening bit. |

So i am back on it now, finished the rocker interior.
turned out ok and looks reasonably factory.
Managed to get the vent slider to work too.
Then moved onto the top front corner of the inner wing and screen.
Like the rockers its a complicated arrangement with three seperate layers of steel at the top.
Did the screen surround first, as i dont have any form of wheeling machine or shrinker/stretcher, made it in three bits
Bit of filler and it will be just fine.
Back to the inner corner tonight. |

Thanks for the praise, i have been restoring vw's for years but only as a hobby, the more you do the better they get.
Also seeing how other people do stuff teaches you a lot. |

Continued with the inner wing top repair
Done
Then it was onto here
Out with the rot
Made up a repair piece for behind the bumper bracket. As its recessed, had to somehow match the pressing. A socket and some steel bar and lots of hammering, looks reasonable and is hidden by the bracket.
Also fabbed up the edge of the front panel then attached it
Then the inner wing skin repairs are welded on
Inside wheel well view
High zinc primed and done for now.
Onto rust rmoval from underside of tank area next. |

I've been away with work for a while to Indianapolis, so progress has slowed but i am back on it now,
Left hand front inner wing and heater channel repairs. it was actually not too bad, nowhere near as bad as the RH side. The rocker will probably clean up nice, bit that's for later.
Heres a few pix.
Overview of the area
Forgot to snap some pix during the upper repair but pretty much the same as the other side.
Lower outer inner wing skin
Thats all the rust there was on this side.
Done
Outer done also.
Will move onto the front bumper mount area next, which again is not as bad as the RH side was. Pix to follow later. |

Thanks Bob
Finished the LH front inner wing area last night. It only needed the outer edge replacing.
Can anyone tell me what this 8MM anchor nut is for, its just below the brake fluid reservoir in the LH inner spare wheel well. It had a sheared off bolt in it so must be for something.
Cheers Paul |

I think that's for anchoring the bracket for the washer bottle. Looking good by the way! _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Horn mount? Just throwing a guess, since my 65 has the washer bottle attached to the front edge bracket by the plastic cap/nut arrangement. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hi Bobnorman
No its not for the reservoir, thats held in place by a self taping screw just above the hole.
Hi Bobnotch, no its not for the horn either, might have to repost.

Having looked in the gallery, i think you are correct in that its for the washer bottle. I misread your reply. Must have been not used on my car or changed at some time, as my bottle is installed in the front panel with no bracket, later style i suppose you could say.
Hopefully get some more pix up this week of the continuing progress, although its currently freezing out in the cave.
Cheers |

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's for the vertical bottle, VS the horizontal one on my 64. The strap above it there is for the brake fluid reservior. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Further progress was made this week on the 63.
Left hand rear channel/body corner repairs.
Starting point
Rot cut out of both parts and side repairs started
New metal in place, just a tickle with the grinding tools required
Needed 3 separate patches for this bit
Inside all ground off and primed up
Then it was onto cleaning up the rusty areas around the front air vents, turned out nice and clean, no welds required, yippee.
Have now raised the rear end higher so i can start cleaning the above tramsmission area of the body which is a bit crusty but should clean up ok, hopefully. Pix to follow next week. |

Hi bobnorman
Yes the car is quite amazing for a UK car, rot wise, some areas were bad but nothing like other UK VW s i've owned, most of which had bad rot. It was stored off road for30 years which obviously helped.
Still got some bad areas to do, namely the RH rear inner wing/c pillar area, watch this space for more. |
