Official Type 34 thread
I looked, I didn't see one...so why not?
Lets use this thread to keep all type 34 ghia related content, as a good way to help each other out, share the knowledge, and gain some insight on these awesome cars. There are other dedicated websites, like http://t34world.org/ and http://www.type34.com/ but I don't see much traffic on them. There are already a ton of us owners, past present and future here because of these or our other cars. Spare parts shopping can be done in the classifieds here as well, making thesamba.com a one stop spot for all of your type 34 discussions. There are dedicated facebook groups to the type 34 here http://www.facebook.com/groups/142729642465659/ here http://www.facebook.com/groups/161041280584282/ and here http://www.facebook.com/groups/180923175271409/ , with users from all over the world; I will be putting up invites to come join us here as there are still a ton of people with knowledge that are not regulars here...yet . I personally know of a couple here in Texas alone. For instance, through one of those groups, I learned that someone is reproducing the headliner, even a correct sunroof headliner with the zipper pouch for the handle. I haven't seen it anywhere else!
As I search through the forum for other threads with useful information, I'll post links in this first post, to make stuff already discussed easily accessible.
I really hope this thread is kept alive with stories and pictures of your type 34's. Post pics! Post pics of your type 34 accessories, rare parts, toys, literature, anything type 34 related goes! Maybe it will even make sticky status someday
I have a lot to read. I'm thankful to everybody that has offered me advice, whether they know it or not. Russ, Tram, Lee Hedges, Jacin (hoss), ibjack, gizmobob, notchboy, allwagons, corey when he taught me about his nice white one, huge thanks to bobnotch for his detailed resto thread, and of course Everett and Jen for having us (allowing me?) here
Post 'em up!
Working on an index...I'll be adding this to the first post. If you see stuff you would like indexed in the first post of the thread, please feel free to post it up or PM me, and I'll add it

I'll start.
I've been into VW's since I was 15. I always wanted "that one that looks like a corvair" since I first saw one, in Corey Bloom's driveway when my friend went to go look at it. had to be around 97 or 98. I was never able to afford a nice one, and all the basket cases were always just to far gone for my abilities
Fast forward until this year. I'm doing ok for myself, and wanting another VW, I started looking at buses. And sunroof squarebacks. I found a couple decent type 34's by looking here, and on type34.com, and was set to look at one in the Nor Cal mountains above SF. He had kinda threatened me with "hurry up or I'll put it on eBay" so I went and looked on eBay, and I saw the later model ultra low mileage yellow car from new york for $15K. The next week I saw a '64 sunroof car in Southern California. Could it be, I would find a sunroof Type 34 in good shape, within my budget range? I knew I had to act fast so I gathered up all my finances, made some spreadsheets, sold some company stock, paid off some other stuff, and came up with a safe number that I could spend without putting myself in a bad spot
I used eSnipe for the first time (sorry for anyone else that was bidding) put my max in, and got it. It's been a long time, I got jerked around by shipping companies, brokers, some people here, (ibJack was kind enough to offer me temporary parking if I needed it) but I will detail the shipping woes and wins in the car shipping thread in the general forums. I do have some recommendations
Anyways...Car finally arrived today. It's dark so more pics in the morning, along with some discoveries I'm sure
it's a '64 sunroof model, August of '63 build. Paint looks decent, I can see some clear coat drips that I can hopefully get out. Stock 1600, stock 5 lug brakes, stock interior, albiet missing some major stuff.
Off the top of my head, I need upper and lower dash pads, door and rear top pads. Glove box. interior rear view mirror (yikes! I'm nervous about that one) My friends who are not on thesamba (yet!) Steven and Lillian have a '64 that I will let them introduce to you, but found a parts car and scored me the license plate holder for the rear, original sunvisors, and a pair of nice seat spears!!! SCORE!!! I need to remind them when parts hunting, take the nuts and bolts and screws too, this stuff is hard to find!
I'm pretty excited. I know I will need your help. More pics and updates to my own list tomorrow. I need to go eat and relax, I've been waiting all week for this... _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Hello Erick, since no one has chimed in< I'll be the first to welcome you. I've had 3 type 34's in the past and they are very cool cars to own and drive (except for the part that everyone thinks it's a Corvair) I fixed up one (my favorite) and even took 1st place a couple of times at The Classic. Parts are not as hard as people think they are. Just have to ask the right people, like with everything else. I owned 2 '64s and two '65s. If there is anything I may help you with, feel free to ask. I too did belong to those other clubs and honestly I found more on my own (just like with my squareback) and at one point I sold two cars worth of parts. You have a Beautiful car! keep us posted.
Martin

I would agree but maybe that's because I'm not looking for them. I stumble across them quite often. |

I realise you're not going to be digging into yours as deep as I went into mine, but you're more than welcome to use any part or all of my build thread.
I came across mine a little differently than you did, and in reality, I wasn't really prepared for what I got myself into. I wasn't even looking for it, when it found me. I had been planning on finishing up my 71 Square-vert, when it dropped into my lap, as Russ made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I didn't think it looked too bad, but I also knew it needed some work. A lot of work as it turned out. But I did just get to drive it for an 8 day vacation across country and back, so the hard work did pay off. I really learned quite about them too. You know, who to get parts from, who has what, what fits, and what doesn't. And most of that by trial and error, along with some very knowledgeable T-34 owners like Scott Taylor, and Greg Skinner. I think those 2 helped me the most, when it came to finding info on these cars, as nobody wants to share (or at least it seems like that). Also, like you, I'm a member of both of the other T-34 sites, but not the facebook ones, as I don't do facebook.
I'll say good luck with your project, and if I can help, just ask. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

x3
I was able to aquire all the parts I needed to put my car back together in about 6-8 months. I feel greatful to all those who helped me out. I try and pay if forward with helping others do the same.
Here is what my car looked like when I picked it up
and here is what it looked like at the classic 2011
Still not a perfect car but I love to drive it and always get thumbs up on every trip.
Glad to know you got the car and can't wait to see pictures and updates. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

exactly why I started this here. I don't want this to be about my car, I can start a readers ride thread for that (and probably will). I want this to be about everyones cars, the type 34 experience. It just seams that there is a lot out there, and a lot of people, but all scattered about. I have a feeling sometime in the past there may have been a rift with some people (I just get that feeling by talking to some people) and I'm really not interested in that. And I don't want this to be a club, or anything elitist. Stock, slammed, top cut off, baja'd, rusty bucket, or full custom, all good here
Hopefully people will share their cars and stories and it will take off like the official oval convertible thread, another rare care where you need all the help you can get
If someone wants to post this on the 2 type 34 websites, I'd really appreciate it. I'm not a member due to last name requirements. For reasons others have alluded to on one website in particular. I read it, just can't post. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery!

My first duty for the night after eating, fix the hood release. All done now and found a bunch of stuff. front and rear trunk rubber, door rubber, ash tray, radio stuff, sunroof cable ends (yes, I'm missing sunroof cables...Don't even ask, I'm not happy about that) but I did find the rear view mirror.
Already installed the pop out latches. I'm in for some brake shoe adjusting, shifter adjusting and a good scrub down tomorrow. There is a weekly all makes Saturday night car show really far away, like 2 miles that I'm taking it to. The brakes work but are sketchy, the shifter is really sloppy. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Hi guys,
Nice to see this topic here, this might just be the place where everybody can find everybody.
Four years ago I bought my (very first) beetle (1970 1300). It was a dream come true. I started visiting VW meetings, and at one of the first meetings there was a beautiful car, I couldn't get my eyes off it... (I can even remember the license plate number ) Didn't know what it was, so I started Googling.
About a year and a half ago I got to drive a type 34 for about 50 yards... and fell in love - again. So I started to look around and soon enough, there was one with the right balance of price and state. I drove to Germany in my Subaru, and back home (NL) in my own Type 34 (A friend drove the Sub back )
Check my Facebook for endless amounts of pics: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1930008163079.109883.1028464548&type=3&l=6e6c853392
But if you don't use Fb:

currently restoring a 69' T34...
in the process of trying to get a hold of some parts for it.
The T34world.com is a good place to look at and meet great people willing to help.
non the less, the more places one can go to inquiring, the better.
so, perhaps this can turn into a "i got a T34 part for you" kind a thread...

Here's my February 1962 . I've finally started working on it again after a 6-month hiatus to do some minor house remodeling.
