Randys VW Hobby Shop Comfort TX
A "Genuine VW Shop" dedicated to Classic VW & Porsche air-cooled engines..
I am a factory trained VW mechanic from the early 70's, also a self-taught machinist.
Factory tools and equipment and Factory Training..
Ive been self-employed since 1977 and have only recently put my shop back together on my country property near Comfort, Tx. I can do most machine shop services, and all engine repairs on Air-Cooled Vw's.. Bring your own parts welcome.
I build very high quality VW engines the way the VW factory should have built them- for maximum horsepower and reliable operation.
I use new Cylinder Heads, new Pistons and Cylinders, Genuine VW connecting rods rebuilt, new Camshafts and Lifters and more.. Lots of options..
Complete engines get new Alternators, new Carburetors, Electronic Distributors,
Bosch Ignition parts and much more..
From 1600cc to 1776cc Type1/Bug Engines to 2056cc Type 4/Bus Engines.
I build every engine as though I was going to use it for myself, and I don't cut corners.
So if you're shopping for price alone- I may not be your first choice.
AND> I "do not" remove and reinstall engines into the vehicles !!
I don't have the time or energy to accept every project that comes my way.
So the projects that I do take-on are those where the owner wants 1st class technical and mechanical repairs.. I strive to rebuild engines to a point of perfection using specific machine shop operations and procedures and precise assembly techniques- and of course quality replacement parts (all based on the customers budget).
I enjoy helping people with their projects, giving advise and making recommendations. My shop is a "hobby shop" so I make a little $$ from my labor and used parts, and I pass on all new parts on a cost basis. Also I enjoy educating people with time permitting. You can come for a visit and I will spend an hour showing you how all the pieces come together.
So for those of you who need service to your VW engine- just give me call anytime.
I am a very low-volume/one-man shop and I am over 65yrs old, so don't expect same day service. I also buy used engines. So if you have something for sale give me a call. I am located about 50 miles NW of San Antonio near Comfort TX.
Thanks for looking, Randall Brown..

I recently bought my first VW, a '64 Beetle.I noticed Randy Brown's ad on TheSamba.
My experience dealing with Randy was very satisfying. First ,his shop is very clean and organized. He has agreement forms to sign,as you would expect. He communicated thoroughly, texts, photos, and calls, detailing condition, options, and plan of action. He made an exception in my case, allowing me to come over,to watch ,learn and ask questions, something few mechanics would allow. He does not take on more work than he can manage, he,doesn't want to bog down in project vehicles, and repair work, but rather focus on engines. I will not hesitate to call on Randy in the future with my engine concerns, and I believe anyone else can depend on his services.

"When rating Randy Brown, I have to look at a few things. Did he complete the work that was expected? Did he do the minimal to save himself time and money? Is the work solve the issues with the 1965 Volkswagen Dune/Beach Buggy. I'm going to rate Mr. Brown on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 being unsatisfied and 10 being very satisfied will use him again in the future.
Did Mr. Brown completed the work that was expected? I bought an engine that Mr. Brown himself had rebuilt and repaired. He does his own machine work to ensure tolerances are correct. He does this because he knows from his 40 years of experience that after market parts often do not meet VW specification. He did complete the work as requested. For this I give him a 10.
Did he do the minimal to save himself time and money? Not at all. In fact he drove over a 100 mile round trip to ensure that the throw out barring was replaced, along with some other transmission parts. He recommend to me to do this as it should have been replaced when I had the transmission repaired. He even spent time with me to explain things that I should do now. For example the last guy that worked on this put a fuel filter by the back of the motor. He explained that its an accident waiting to happen. Being that VW have very hot exhaust it would be goofy to put something back there that can melt and set the engine on fire. As I can easily do this myself, he saved me money by informing me, and instructing me to change this myself. For all his hard work I rate him at the highest rating a 10.
Did the work completed fix the original issues with the Dune Buggy? Yes, in fact since he went above and beyond with the clutch it feels better than ever, and even shifts better than ever. for this I rate him at the highest rating 10.
I was nervous about going to another VW shop. I had reserves because my last experience was not good. I happened to find Randy on Craigslist. I now realize that going to Randy was the best decision I ever made for my Buggy. My buggy runs and drives better than ever. I feel like i have real power behind the wheel now. I am more than happy with the results from the work that Randy did on my buggy. I also think that the price was very fair, and I will be a returning customer. I recommend Randy for all your VW needs"..
Thank you, Eric Atwood
David Fies, 1960 VW Truck - 30 Sep 2015
Mine was a bit more of a “project” than he normally prefers to take on; but when we got talking and he found out that the vehicle was a 1960 single cab - and that I was a vet - he agreed to help me.
The truck had been through an extensive renovation and was absolutely gorgeous. The engine that came with the purchase, however, was a mess. Randy pulled it, allowing me to leave the truck on his property, and took it apart to give me a thorough and precise diagnosis and a very (very, very) fair quote for work to be performed.
All through the process (two weeks) he would send me updates and pictures - even allowing me to come out to watch the work being performed; teaching me about the parts and how they fit to make the engine work. The trouble he went to to make that 1776 fit in the truck was probably worth a lot more than he charged. And when it was done he and I went on a test drive; after which he followed the truck to my home so he could take me back to pick up the car I’d arrived in. What service!
This man is knowledgeable; he is fast; he is fair; he is a natural teacher, and I have no higher praise than to say: “He is an honest, caring man.”
"Randy.....just wanted you to know that the last type 1 case you align-bored for me turned out great. It went together so sweet. I always wonder when mating a case if it is still going to turn over and spin like it should when it is finally torqued together. This one was one of the best I have ever had.....Keep up the good work (align-boring)
