Straight-cut 4th gears are specifically for heavier Vanagons with high horsepower engines that travel for hours at a time at high freeway speeds (especially with TDi engine installs).
German Steel, proprietary heat-treatment, shot-peened for additional strength.
REM-polished fine street teeth, made to run as quiet as possible.
Straight-cut eliminates erosion of mainshaft ball bearing race AND false brinelling of 4th gear bore, common in TDi conversions.
Straight-cut 4th gear ratios available: .828, .813, .775, .729, .706
