Here we have a simple and functional tribute to the Stahlwille UNO 1024 17mm Hex magnetic wrench. A fantastic tool that has helped many a VW enthusiast with stock single port engine removal and installs. Originals are difficult to source in the wild, so an alternative is now available – but also in D shape!

OG Bosch 6V starters and early Bellhousings do not have any provisions to stop the top 17mm Hex head M10 engine bolts from spinning when finger tightening the hex nut on the engine side. This "wrench" setup is designed for those of us without a second pair of hands to hold it in place.

Later on, Bosch/ VW incorporated little cast nubs on 12V starters and drivers side bellhousings to be used with D shaped head Bolts. That was a better idea, but it can still be difficult to keep the bolt from pushing back when spinning the nut on blindly by hand. **These wrenches do not work very well with the modern nub setup, as they interfere with the tool and wont let it set flush.

This initial protoype debut batch of tools are laser cut from mild steel and plated black for a little extra corrosion resistance. They are mild steel instead of stainless so they are magnetic, allowing the magnet to hold without the need to glue it on. Included is a round magnet with steel shell to aid in keeping the wrench attached to the bolt head. You can easily remove it to use the tool bare, or flip it on the other side if that gains better access in your application. The wrench has a few holes put in it so you can hang it up, attach a spring to it and the car sheet metal to hold the bolt tight, or tie on a lanyard string to make removing it remotely more feasible for us with arms and hands larger than a typical 10 year old.

Special Thanks to Metric VW located Down Under in Koala country for the good idea.
