Magazine-Featured 1964 Volkswagen Beetle
2332cc, Gene Berg 5-Speed, Dual IDAs, Wilwood Brakes
This 1964 Volkswagen Beetle is a magazine-featured, California-built custom that blends timeless style with serious street performance. Finished in a bold Deep Purple over off-white upholstery, it’s a head-turning beach cruiser that’s been featured in two VW publications—a testament to the quality and uniqueness of the build. Beetles of this caliber rarely come to market, and this one is ready for its next enthusiast owner.
Power comes from a professionally built 2332cc flat-four engine assembled by Dave Rhoads of Stanton, California. Highlights include Pauter chromoly 5.5-inch rods, an 84mm forged Scat crankshaft with Chevy journals, and 94mm forged pistons with Mahle rings. The valvetrain features an Engle camshaft with straight-cut gears, Eaton lifters, and welded VW dual-port heads with relocated spark plug holes, oval intake ports, triple valve springs, and titanium retainers. Feeding this powerhouse is a pair of Weber 48 IDAs, while ignition is handled by a Mallory Magneto. A Mallory electric fuel pump and a Gene Berg 26mm oil pump feed a remote external oil cooler with fan to help manage engine temps.
The exhaust system was custom fabricated by Custom Headers of Huntington Beach and includes a 1-7/8" merged header, a straight-through muffler, and a 2.5" tailpipe. The engine is paired to a highly sought-after Gene Berg 5-speed transmission, engaged via a Deano double-disc floater clutch and a 200mm lightened aluminum flywheel. The setup delivers exhilarating acceleration and the pleasure of a true overdrive cruising gear. The car has been dyno tested at 186 horsepower by Racing Engines in Anaheim, California.
Chassis upgrades include a 4-inch narrowed front beam with adjusters and brand-new Wilwood 4-piston front disc brakes. Two complete sets of wheels are included with the sale: a set of Tokyo Japan Flat 4 BRMs and a set of chrome EMPI 5-spokes, allowing you to switch up the look with ease. The stance is unmistakably Cal-look, and the performance more than backs it up.
Inside, the interior was completely redone in flawless VW Off-White by InCar Designs in Huntington Beach. The headliner was installed by Westminster Auto Upholstery, and a period-style EMPI GT steering wheel is currently mounted (the original steering wheel is also included). The cabin features pop-out rear windows and clean, understated trim throughout, offering a subtle nod to classic VW enthusiasts.
Exterior features include European-spec Cibie headlamps and US-spec towel-rail bumper guards, first seen on mid-1950s models and rarely found on later examples. These small details are the kind of touches that VW purists will appreciate.
This Beetle is an exceptional build, thoughtfully executed and well-documented. It runs strong, looks stunning, and comes with a host of rare and valuable components. With its proven performance, show-worthy presentation, and magazine credentials, this ‘64 Beetle is a rare opportunity to own a true icon—done right.
