1954 Barndoor Kombi, Behr Scoop, Safaris, Upgrades Price: $115,000
|
1954 Barndoor Kombi, Behr Scoop, Ambulance Fan, Safari Windows, 2 Liter Engine, Disc Brakes, Porsche Alloys, the list goes on!
This gorgeous 1954 Kombi was sold brand new at Competition Motors in Los Angeles and has lived most of its life in California. In its early years it was used as a School Bus in Death Valley, the hottest and driest desert town in America. The incredibly arid and hot desert climate went a long way to preserving the original German sheet metal on this Bus! If you're like me and you don't get excited about Barndoors that have had a ton of welding and reconstruction, you need to take a closer look at this 1954. This Bus has been in advanced collector hands for decades now and has been treated with love and respect as a result.
The features on this Bus are many and include:
*Original Behr Roof Scoop Bus with original and working Barndoor Ambulance Fan Assembly! They never work, but this one does!
*All 3 Rows of Barndoor Seats, Reproduction 6 Leg Middle, Matt Miller Upholstery
*Barndoor Safari Windows, Competition Engineering and Wolfgang Parts Utilized
*2020cc TorqueMaster Engine with Dual 44 Weber Carbs from Anibal Chico
*Freeway Flyer Transmission
*Custom Narrowed Beam from Dogback Beams in Germany
*4 Wheel Porsche 944 Disc Brakes with Brembo Calipers
*Reproduction Porsche Fuchs Alloy Wheels, 4.5" and 6", Detailed by John Kloss, Continental Tires
*Vintage Speed Shifter
*ISP West Tachometer and Temperature Gauges
The bodywork and L31 Dove Blue paint were professionally done some years back by Josh Hibbler, of Rust Haven, in Pennsylvania. It still looks plenty nice today and only minimal welding was needed during the restoration. There are some minor flaws around that are shown in the photo link below. Details to note include all the correct Barndoor doors, correct long rib Barndoor front bumper, and the Barndoor decklid was replaced with an NOS German decklid when the Bus was repainted. You can still see the factory grey primer on the inside as well as the entire engine compartment still showing factory grey paint! Other features include seamed Barndoor doglegs, correct Barndoor Frese glass reflectors, Barndoor Hella K1509 taillights with a LED conversion so they flash as blinkers and function as brakelights, and working semaphores that also flash for added visibility while changing lanes on modern roads!
The interior is clean and has lots of signs of originality including a lot of original paint such as the inside of the roof, etc. Note the lack of moisture staining and surface rust on the inner roof, this Bus has been crazy dry since it left the Wolfsburg factory 71 years ago! All 3 rows of seats are wearing quality upholstery from the late Matt Miller. Correct Barndoor front floor mat, original footrest bar, and a set of grey panels from Lenny of West Coast Classics, too.
Mechanically the Bus is a excellent runner and driver as is evidenced by the many action videos I can share via text, WhatsApp, or can be seen on our Instagram page @holygrailgarage The 2020cc engine has less than 1,000 miles and features dual Weber 44 IDF carbs with Vintage Speed linkage and air cleaners, Magna Spark II ignition, Darale remote oil cooler with thermostat, powder coated tins, carbs, and intake manifolds, gloss black alternator with hidden wiring, electric fuel pump, a ceramic coated Sidewinder exhaust, and it produces approximately 110 foot pounds of torque. Well over $10,000 has been invested in the engine alone! The transaxle is a Freeway Flyer, the beam has been narrowed, the rear is straight axled, there are Porsche disc brakes at all 4 corners, the emergency brake works, and the electrical system is 12 volts as well. The Bus starts right up, has a healthy sound, has plenty of power to get around, and looks great, too.
Those of you who are especially familiar with Barndoor Buses understand that it's hard to find a legitimately "good" one these days that isn't a victim or cobbled from scraps and a ton of replacement metal. This California desert 1954 Kombi has survived much better than most, has been treated to several high quality and tasteful stylistic upgrades, and is ready for more miles with a lucky new owner. Thanks!
$115,000
Please note this Barndoor is located in San Jose, California.
