I'm working on an October 1962 Double Cab truck. I'm trying to learn what was authentic for the emergency hazard switch & knob. My truck came with the switch (and it works) but the knob is solid black, matching the other dash knobs. I read the previous threads and learned a lot about the 1966 & 1967 switches/knobs, but did not learn about the early models.

When was the first emergency hazard switch introduced into Buses?

The emergency switch has four tabs on the backside that connect to the four turn signal wires in any order. The knob is where I'm confused. Is the knob black (commercial) or ivory (deluxes) or is it red? I've seen parts for sale that show both a black knob, ivory knob, and a red knob. Here's a pic collage of the red knob version which I believe was used from 1962-65.

I agree. Black for Commercials. White for Passenger Buses.

For reference, the one in my '63 Deluxe is white.

So when did emergency hazard lights get introduced?
And when did the red knob get introduced?

Thanks for the clarification! I prefer the solid black knobs.

Hazards started in late 62 sometime, I'm not sure of the exact date.

The light was added to the dash at the end of November, 1962.
(From progressive Refinements)

The red knob started in 1964 but I'm not sure when.

The red knob changed to have a light inside that flashed in 1966.

My March 19 1962 SC has hazard with black knob, like wiper and head light switch.

I was doing some research on this to see what is correct for a '63 deluxe and found this thread. My Oct '62 panel van came to me with a red emergency flasher knob and I also have an Oct '61 bus which also has the same emergency flasher switch with a red knob. Do both buses have the wrong switch/knob or is possible the solid red knobs appeared earlier?

Here's some pics of the red knob switch compared to a black knob.

I believe someone installed a later knob in those Buses.

You say your 10/61 Bus has a switch?
I believe someone added the whole emergency light system to that Bus as it wasn't standard yet AFAIK.

Since you say '63 Deluxe:
My mostly original '63 Deluxe has a white knob to match the other dash knobs.
I am 100% sure this is correct.

There was an optional earlier version that was a dealer installed item, much like the early bus accessory windshield washer kit. Years ago found the VW accessory part numbered box for one with instructions in German. Unfortunately the kit was used and only the NOS wiring of the kit remained. I kept it out in hopes of sometime having the instructions translated, but Barb did not like having it out on display. So she put it somewhere safe and have not seen it in the last two or so decades.... Crying or Very sad

Thanks Everett,

The two buses look to have the exact same setup. Same two relays and clips in the same spots, same wiring, same switches and knobs. That's not to say one or both had them added after the fact.

This would make perfect sense. Thanks!
