Dave thats a pretty good point. The air resistance is a big part of the horsepower loss.
But having a choice of dropping 800 grams or keeping them, I would be excited to give that 2nd gen fan a try. _________________ [email protected] MPH 1/4 Mile & 8.1 @ 83.7MPH in 1/8 Mile with Mild Type 1 VW Mag Case 2234cc commuter engine in stock weight bug w/only .491 total lift(CB2292 Cam), 42x37 heads, 48idf's, Street tires, Belt on, Mufflers, Pump gas, video of the run here: https://youtu.be/M3SPqMOKAOg

If this fan draws in the air in with less resistance and is more efficient, it could push more air at less HP draw…but that’s above my mathematical knowledge |

A belt driven fan takes power to move air: rotational mass + fan blade drag. While the blade drag will consume more power, you can't completey dismiss reduction in rotational mass. I'll take any gain..no matter how small _________________ In Progress:

More like 6000-7000 rpm as dyno testing has shown. The stock belt could never survive transmitting that much hp continuously.

Not necessarily. Every fan has a fan curve. This is the graph of the hp vs. CFM. It is possible to change to a different fan that can move more air requiring less hp. But we don't know if that applies because AFAIK, there has never been published fan curves of the stock fan, or the two andrigs fans. _________________

The rotational inertia of the fan is only a factor when you're accelerating it. Once you're at cruising speed, its mass is irrelevant.
The mass of the fan will have zero effect on mileage. Since it's lighter, your engine should pick up revs a tiny bit quicker, similar to a lightened flywheel, but not as pronounced. _________________

Wait....are you saying that rotational mass is not a factor when you're parked too?.......no waaaaay.... _________________ In Progress:

Is yours a Gen I or Gen II fan?
My Gen I rubbed a little. When I first tried it. The rubbing caused the fan material to melt a little. I trimmed the lightly melted bit away and remounted the fan on the gen.
You need to check that the fan has equal spacing all the way around the gen backing plate. Mine was a little off on the spacing. I made a minor adjustment to the fan and gen backing plate spacing. No more rubbing. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Gen 2. Rubs on the inlet side of the shroud. I thought about shaving the spacer on the alternator shaft a bit, but ran out time and had to get the engine back in (bus). Next time the engine comes out I'll mess with it more. _________________ 67 Bug

The shroud is roughly the same dimensions, though you may need to loosen tins to get it to slide in. It didn't just drop in for me. The fan opening is considerably larger so a regular velocity ring won't work. I believe Andrig is making a ring for it. I made my own by welding a sheet metal ring around it, making slices, bending the tabs over, and then fiberglassed to fill in the slices. It turned into a 2 inch tall velocity stack. |

Got one ordered for the race car! This will go nicely with the 10# FW and the 51/2" crank pulley. |

Too bad he hasn't figured out how to make the dual inlet design work. Very clever. There must be a way to get that done in another material but maybe the tooling cost etc. is too much of a barrier. |
