I have a 1966 standard bus with a 1600 DP in it. It currently has a bugpack style header on it into a glass pack. I put new gaskets on it and it still leaks at the donut going out of the left heater box, which I’ve read is an issue. Im looking for the best fitting, not obnoxious sounding exhaust that works with heater boxes. Would the stock bus muffler negatively affect performance on this motor? Are there other options I should consider? |

I currently have a stock muffler on my 1600DP and it runs great. Sounds good too, seems to pull hills better than when I had headers on and the bugpack on it. Also heat risers will work a lot better on stock muffler than headers.
Since you don't have a big high performance engine, I'd stick with stock. _________________ 66 SO42 L87

If you can get your hands on a stock muffler for a bay window 1971 and up with the 1600 DP motor, you would have the exact match. The muffler is essentially the same as the earler one but the tail pipe has a slightly larger ID. The only drawback is, that the single piece tail pipe will need some massaging to fit past the bumper.
I know that motor war not offered as an option in the US. But maybe some mufflers made their way accross the pond. _________________ - Michael

Fun with Vdubs is running a series on power potential of a 1600DP using a well used engine and a dyno rig. They covered headers and exhausts in episodes a few weeks ago. Worth having a look. They found that a fancy header gained less than 1.4hp over the stock VW exhaust.
Fitment-wise though, I've tried a few stock exhausts and their fit was generally terrible. The worst part though is the heater 'pips' that connect the hoses from the fan shroud to the heat exchangers. My advice would be that if you fit a new stock exhaust and have a worn out stock exhaust which fits well, salvage those pips from the old exhaust (they're crimped on), clean them up and fit them on your new exhaust.
The heat riser flanges are also a pain but at least they'll fit with some brute force and persistence.

Use copper RTV on the fiber donuts. They wont leak then |

Torque is more important than HP with the buses.
If you go with stock muffler first check if the doughnut seal fits somewhat snugly onto the rear pipes of both Heat exchangers. If those seals are loose the pipe of the HEs has corroded down in OD and that will cause exhaust leakage there. You could have a local muffler shop make and weld on new pipes to fix that.
Yes, there are the quicky fix pipes that one can hammer into the rear of the HEs, but the inner diameter is smaller than the HEs pipes. That will cause more back pressure for the exhaust. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
