I had the dash ashtray re-chromed, and it looked awesome, but all of the tabs broke off when I tried to re-attach it (probably hydrogen embrittlement), so I glued it with Marine PC-11 epoxy

You glued the chrome lid to the ash holder? Or you glued the assembled ashtray to the painted dash? |

I polished and installed the rocker trims, and the WCM trim insert matches my paint perfectly

Thom,
Your trim came out awesome... I'm just getting ready to do mine. Can you share your technique?
Also, sources for chroming are becoming far and few between... who did you use?
Thanks! _________________ Erik S

I bought a bench polisher on amazon, a couple of wheels, and went to town. There's lots of online resources for this. I bought a two-speed unit, which was a good idea in hindsight, as it's easier to handle the smaller pieces at the lower speed.

I used Sherm's plating here in Sacramento. I've also used Ogden chrome in Utah, which specializes in 'mail order' chrome plating, but you really have to be on them about the quality. They destroyed a set of Type 34 door handles; luckily I had a spare set and they re-chromed those for free. _________________ -Thom

Thanks. I've got a variable speed HF grinder/buffer and various buffing wheels and compounds I've been experimenting with, but I'm not super happy with the results yet. I need a process aggressive enough to remove some light pitting, and then work my way up to the beautiful shine you have. _________________ Erik S

You're probably better off wet-sanding with a progression of 400/600/800/1000/1500 to handle the pitting. Start with the higher grit, if it's not working, then move down a grit until you start seeing results, then work back up. Rotary buffing is not going to remove pits unless you use a very aggressive compound. Remember, you're ultimately removing material to smooth out the pits. _________________ -Thom

Today I ordered a Vintage Speed exhaust, a hitch from Jeremy Hoggard, and a new fuel tank and wiring harness from Wolfburg West. Good thing my bus is a camper because when the Visa bill comes in my wife will make me go live in it!
I still need to order a fuel pump, fuel line, and a German shroud and tin so I can get it back together and running. Also need to either get the carbs rebuilt or replaced as I suspect they, or at least one of them, was the cause of my troubles. |

Glued some vinyl on the rear quarter panel. Yeah, yeah, I know stock was painted, but IMHO the vinyl looks good and should wear well. Went overboard on the clamps because I hate puffy edges. Next is to add some piping.

For me it's more like "What did your bus do for you today?". I used my repro ladder on my bus to help me store my 16' DN iceboat mast and the plank to the rafters in my garage. Little did I know I overworked my crappy knee and needed lots of fluid drained yesterday.

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

Yesterday I spent three hours and I was quite satisfied with the result. The day before I spent almost the same time for passenger's door (only the white paint!!).
Gowing forward.
Have a nice day. |

My 1957 deluxe's original rebuilt and first run-in. It's a little noisy, so I'm going to re-adjust the valves this afternoon. I still need to build a new carb; I put a bug air cleaner on it because that's what I had at-hand - need to clean up and re-paint a bus air cleaner.
