I cleaned the engine compartment, painted the new battery tray, installed the gas tank with a new sender and prepped for engine reinstallation.

I was going to clean the engine up and paint the tin , but it's so original and clean I might roll with it as is. I'm rebuilding the original carb to make it complete. It did have an odd front tin piece on it that didn't fit the bus engine opening, maybe from a VW thing? I replaced it with one that fits properly.

Edit: the odd front tin looks like a '71 only bus tin, I didn't realize buses got upright engines with doghouse oil coolers. Today I learned. That means this engine was from a 71 bus as I have no doubt it's all original and came with the altitude correction valve on the carb.

Cool engine . 71 complete bus engines are a thing , the pinnacle of the upright 1600.Great to keep the package original albeit not to this bus.

I was trying to convince myself to use the engine as-is, with rusty heater boxes but my better judgement got the better of me. I was dreading the job because working with old exhaust parts flat out sucks. This morning I bit the bullet and dove in. I only broke off one stud (but I broke it three times trying to get it out). I drilled it out and tapped it

I opted to use a good used set of heater boxes to match the style of the engine. I have a few sets of newer aftermarket ones kicking around but I trust the originals better and they work nicely on this engine.

The job sucked as expected but could have been a lot worse.

Those heater boxes are crusty! Having stock heat is really nice on cold days compared to no heat.

Looks like you will be driving down the road in no time. I can envision a camping trip in your near future

Wow BarryL that is an interesting design I wonder if it is for another tool to get some torque.

I looked at mine today. On the opposite side is a perfect hole. Both sides are blocked from going all the way through with a strand of plastic. Strange...I'd love to know for sure. It looks like you could put a spare fuse or two on the long slot.
