what would you guys think about using silk thread between the case halves, similar to how they do it on airplanes. one of the guys i work with also uses Permatex 3. airplanes usualy don't drip any oil, but they also don't see the same use. i just wanted a few ideas for when i build my motor next week. thanks |

I have heard about the silk thread trick and talking with folks that had done it, they rave about how dry it stays. Personal I have never tried it, but I think I will have to check it out. The only concern I have is, does it change the gap on the case halves?
Personaly I'm a Permatex 3 man. So far it works well with a occasional sweat. _________________ '65 NotchBack. Project underway.

Unless the case halves surfaces are damaged, ( i.e. screwdriver blade/pryed apart or corrosion) the case halves/seam usually do not leak.
I have used Permatex Aviaiton or other similar sealing compound on many many engines and if after years/ miles of use if any leaks occurred it was always some other seal/component.
Just be sure to wipe the case surface off with a LINT FREE rag and laquer thinner just before appling the sealing compound.
I have also used the 3M glue and it works great too but makes the case too hard to get back apart. IMO |

It will not affect your bearing clearances/crush values so long as you route it towards the outer edges of the case halves as you approach main bearing #4. At all other points, you are well within the case's ability to conform. I would only use this trick if you have known sealing surface defects. If you are merely paranoid from some prior leaker job, just be careful with the usual procedure.
Personally, I have found Permatex 3H to be annoying and quick drying in all the wrong ways compared to the earlier Permatex 2 which flowed smoother and dried slower.

I'm hooked on Curil T for my engines. Never hardens, and is made by the same company that makes the gasket kits for our VW's. _________________ Eric Allred

I have always liked Gascasinch (spelling?) Comes in a small can w/ a brush attached to the lid. It has a 50's logo on it of a girl. I used to buy it at BAP-Geon. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

I don't think so but you can get an appropriate sealer from CB Performance. I have used Curil K2 in the past and if I recall correctly it was the sealant recommended by the factory. |
