At the factory, the nose panel was spot welded on last (lucky dogs). I wish that I hadn't done it but I cut off the bottom of the nose panel on my 1957 bus. It had a deep golf ball size dent at the bottom and a section of the crimp had been pushed in or I wouldn't have done it.
The problem that I saw was that that stupid taller outer panel sticks up behind the nose panel and has to be spot welded to the inner panel. All I could think of was that the two should be spot welded together, first, then shoved behind the nose panel and tack welded/spot welded from behind. Ideally, the nose panel should be off of the body in order to put the puzzle together.
I have removed two of those inner panels and, gee, was that fun. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

I think that's how the 3 parts of the Gerson's nose fit. They all need some type of tweaking (ahem) to make them co operate.
I was cruising along with the metal work as well, UNTIL the nose job!
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...p;start=60
There are my trials and tribulations and some hints if I may?
1) Has your bus been in an accident? If it has, then it will need more than minor tweaking to fix.
2) You might have to slice and dice the outter panel/nose or the inner one. More than one person had to do it, so it's not just me.
3) BUMPER BRACKETS!! Trust me, don't bother without them! You will really not be happy if you do all the work and nothing lines up. They help!
4) I can't help much on the ends as I got lucky and mine just lined up perfectly. But I can see that you have some non-perfect/damaged metal. The passenger side 'lip' right above the inner valance looks a bit messed up. That can interfere with how far back it needs to go.
I'm not a metal master so maybe someone else can chime in?
Also, the ends are going to flare out like in your pic. I put clamps on the end and started welding. It worked out good in the end |
