I have to agree with everybody. All i can say is WoW! My jaw hit the floor when i saw the jig you made for doing the bulkhead. I am going to need to do it on my 71 im building as my dd and would love to borrow that! Very Happy or at least get all your foot notes on it. Looks like it made it way easier.
keep up the great work!!!

Thank u guys for the great words!!! God, if you want to borrow it just have to make the 3000 mile trek! Nah if you need any info on building one just shoot me a PM and I'll gladly help. Definetly located it exactly were the stock framehead was. Just be careful cutting the old one off and to seperate the under steel to slide into the new piece. Fun stuff!

Matt, Great work. I new to the VW game, I've learned from your posts. I was born in Patchogue, and grew up in Port Jeff. If I still lived there I'd come over and buy you a beer. Keep the posts and pics coming.

Heres a couple shots of where the rear crossmember terminates the outer quarter. You can see the spot welds on the outer vertical egde and the upper into the crossmember.

On the inside the same spot where crossmember meets the quarter. Rough cut and you can see the various spot welds there. Mine had some rust areas so I cut the whole thing out to make more work for myself! YES!

I actually made a simple locating jig that bolts from body mounts to the temporary angle iron cross brace. You can see the 2 holes right above the craftsman seat. Cant find the pic though.

Shot of the pass side quarter looking into the heater channel end toward front. Spot welds all over the place! Crossmember came out pretty easily though.

haha looks good!

and you can't beat that california condition!

my 71' was never taken out of California, and I thought I had a bad time since it had a 5"x3" rust hole under the battery that I had to cut/weld...

I have to hand it too you, if mine was like that, I would not have known where to start!

also, another reason I'm not gunna drive it in the winter, you know they put salt on the roads here!?!?!??! cars + salt = dumb, and a rust bucket...

and they said I can't use chains here.....

Matt:
We will be out of town for a few days and will get back to you upon our return. i did attempt to e-mail you with questions re the Jig dimensions and list of materials. Also whether I was interpreting your photo re cutting in front of the old Nap hat on the frame head and addition of material prior to welding the new Nap hat/frame head? Aside from vertical & horizontal what were your key reference points since removal of your body?

Keep up the great work!

Bob

Thanks for the heads up dude. I'll have to keep my eye on it or my ass off that part of the seat. Its a long way away from seat install!

Shocked I had replace that quarter too!
The damage looked identical, actually... only mine was the driver's side.
(TOTAL PITA)
You can check out what I did in my build thread in my sig if you want... Though you'll probably put my work to shame... Wink

KICKASS BUILD, btw.

Cool

We seem to be missing some of your most recent pics here. Liking your work and a luggage tray replacement is on my future.

Great build thread you have here. We seem to have some of the same issues with our cars. Great idea on the frame head jig. Think I might use it myself.

Thanks!!
I've been neglecting this build thread ( without responding to others, sorry guys ) and havent had time to work on my project lately. Its almost been a year Rolling Eyes . My goal is to be back on it this fall because its perfect weather to be in the garage around here!
If you need any measurments on the jig I'd gladely help you out. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for looking and good luck on your project!
