We are working on cutting out the damaged portion of the spare tire tray. The right side is done:

This "Mystery_Part": fell out of the chassis:

Please let me know if you recognize what that is and where it goes Smile

We have two hoods. One from the White 1975, and one from the yeller 1974. I have no reason to think either is original, since both cars have been bashed up front. The white one has a bump extending below the latch, the yeller one is smooth in that area. Any idea which is more correct for a 1975 LaGrande?

The white hood is correct for 1975.

This is a pic of a 1975 vert with the little bump extending below the handle:

Well, that one also is in better shape, so I guess it is the winner Smile Thanks for the research and assurance.

We made some progress on replacing the spare tire well. The heavy bumper supports were munged around a bit. We carefully adjusted them with big blue (8lb hammer) until the cross measurements were the same.

In this shot, we have removed the front ~ 1/2 of the spare tire well:

Here is a test fit of the rough-trimmed new Wolfsburg West Spare Tire Well in place:

Quite encouraging actually. It seems to be a great fit. Much more trimming and fiddling to do. I plan to make some small holes and use sheet metal screws to assure that all the parts are straight and line up with each other before doing any welding. I will assume that the new sheet metal is straight, and that may make it necessary to fudge the bumper supports a bit to line them up.

that little plastic part that fell out, it goes under the chassy, infront of the frame head, it serves no perpose as far as i can see (could be wrong)

All i can tell is if you were to fly over a speed bump into a ditch and possibly scrape the bottom of your chasy it could hit that plastic.

Also there is one on the rear of the chasy in the middle of it between the rear torsion bars.

I could take photos...

Interesting. I'll look for the place where it might fit. Maybe it was just to hold the chassis up during assembly or something,

A pic would be great if it is not too much trouble.

The rubber thing is a water drainage valve!

It belongs into the hole in the middle of the frame fork at the end of the chassis between the torsion bars. You can also install two at each side end of the frame head to keep water out (what I did on my super).

Looks like WolfsburgWest has one version:

and CIP1 has a different version:

I went ahead and ordered new fenders from CIP1. I decided the worry of the old fenders either not matching, cheaper construction than the modern CIP ones. I _know_ that all the old ones need various levels of body work, and I only _suspect_ that one is OG.

In what may make purists choke, we decided to add an early Wolfsburg crest and early VW emblem to the hood. Since we need a wide (old style) trim piece to match up with the Wolfsburg crest, we decided to use the early style trim (in stainless) for the entire car. A side benefit of going to the wider trim is that it will be easier to hide where this car was "de-chromed".

I also got some new tail lights, new lenses for the front turn signals, and some LED pucks to place in the new lights.

I decided to try one of these "Mexi Hood Seals":
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Front-Hood-Seal-Beetle-and-Superbeetle-Mexibug-p/mexihoodseal.htm

I'm on the fence about if that will work well.

Also, the literature for the car shows the same hood.

On the white '68 from which you cut the rear quarter panels- Remember that the size of the rear window is different than on your '75. The '68's is slightly narrower. The full width size from your '75 started with the '72 model year. If you can trim the rusty metal close to the window edge on the '75 and cut the '68's panel to match, then you'll be OK.

Otherwise you're doing a tremendous job!

Lime Green Metallic is a wonderful color- my '77 Std. Beetle was originally that color, but the PO repainted it an early '70's Camaro green. VW also used it on the '75 Scirocco. Porsche used the same color and called it viper green metallic.

We plan to make the smallest possible hole in the "good" car, and take a correspondingly small patch out of the '68 clip. Really it will just be some "pre-curved" metal.

Thanks for the kind words. Sometimes it seems like an insurmountable task.

We finally disassembled the rack-and-pinion today. The boot was cracked two places and you could see some rust in there. If it wasn't for the rust I was sorely tempted to re-grease it and just slide the new boot on.

But once we got it apart I am glad we tore into it.

Here are the parts cleaned up:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

There is some wear:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The original machining marks on the rack are crosswise (marked by small blue double head arrows). Where it is worn the marks are along the rack (larger orange double head arrow).

The tension things are also worn pretty badly. My first reaction would be to get a new, clean large flat file and dress those surfaces.

There was some really-hard-grease or really-decomposed-rubber that had a kind of pink granular texture. Reminded me a bit of a ruined Pink Pearl eraser. That makes me wonder if I am missing a part in there somewhere.

Any rack-and-pinion experts out there?

Anyone have or know of a exploded rack and pinion diagram?

A cozy night here at the homestead. Blowing and snowing outside. A perfect opportunity to cuddle up with a flat file, fine grit wet-or-dry sandpaper, a piece of hardware glass, and the scored rack-and-pinion parts:

Here are the parts that rub on each other, compare them to the scored picture a couple posts up:

I keep finding things out that I did not know. I was very surprised to find a beefy side-impact beam in the door:

I do not remember a beam like that on my 1972 1302 Super. When were those added?

I found that out when I was pulling a door off of a junkyard car awhile back. The change to the side-impact reinforced door happened in 1974.
