Is this the correct size rear apron bolt? It measured 81mm in length and threaded decent to the triangles, probably an M8. My truck didn't come with an apron and I need to install it (and one of the triangles) to align everything in the rear.

This is for a 66. I am assuming they are all the same for 67 and older but I couldn't find anything on the samba.

Thanks.

The parts lists says they are 8 X 42 - that is measured from the base of the head.

You need shorter bolts.

I have used RGB half bolts. For some reason the apron bolts go missing often, and tend to be rusty crusty if there, but RGB bolts tend to be not rusty. They are a tad shorter IIRC, but not enough to make a functional difference.
Use a split washer and a wide wavy washer with the apron bolts.

I have used split case transmission bolts also. The ones that hold the case together where they split. Don't know if I ever measured them but I remember it working. Plus early ones are 14mm for buses that need it.

Good stuff thanks! I should have plenty of those 14mm bolts since I tore down a split case trans last year. I will try some different combinations tonight from my stash.

CV boot bolts work if you add a washer.

The 14mm split case trans bolts are the perfect length by the way! Thanks.

They protrude past the captive nut by about 4mm. Total length of the bolt I used was 56.5mm.

Just to close this out for anyone searching this thread in the future, I'd say the smallest bolt you could use would be 52mm in length.
