My 1981 aircooled vanagon is running really smooth until under load or it runs till warm then it loses spark and shuts off. I have tested power to the coil reading 11.54 at the end of the wire to the distributor 11.15 but no spark at the plugs. I also have no power to 86a on double relay all only seems to happen when hot

I had been decades since I last own a vehicle with ignition points. I am not familiar with 81 Vanagon, but I would venture to guess it has ignition points inside the distributor - instead of hall effect sensor in the later years.

The way most old ignition systems with points work is one side of the ignition coil is kept "hot". The other side of the coil gets shorted to ground at the exact right moment a few degrees before the piston reaches TDC. This crucial function is carried out by the ignition points inside the distributor. If the points are so worn, it can cease to open and close, and you will have no spark. It is possible it get to a point that is very marginal that increase and decrease of a few tens of degree can make or break it. I however would not rule out your problem can have other cause(s). Systematic troubleshooting is the only sure way to find the fault.

please specify if you van has points or electronic ignition. the 1919 van came either way depending on the market for which it was built.

if I understand correctly the double relay pin 86A is powered up during start (ie cranking) only. is that correct and are you testing during cranking?

sorry I am not more helpful, the 81 van I am not as well versed on.

My '69 camper with OG points ignition had the problem of running smoothly for hundreds of miles, but the engine dieing at low RPM and not starting again for half an hour. It was a bad coil which got worse/unusable when hot and was usable after it had cooled.

I had stopped to help a lady out of a snowbank and left my camper idling. The engine died and I didn't get back to it for about twenty minutes while the ignition key was still in the RUN position. The coil got cooked, but it started again in the cold weather and the problems didn't show up until I got back to SoCal.

Your problem might be a weak/bad coil.

Of all my vehicle ownership. I had one ignition coil that died on me, with the exact symptom. Hot bad, cold good. Nowadays those coils seldom die. But they now have 1/2 x the coils as the number of cylinders. MBTF is inversely proportional to the number of parts you have in a system. Rolling Eyes
