Where do I find the rear axle serial number on a Type 3?
I'm trying to discover whether the rear subframe that came with my early-62 T34 is original to the car or from something else.
The VIN # is #0 001 200 and the front axle serial number is only partially visible (XX24), as the rubber snubbers were removed by a previous owner.
For comparison sake the VIN # of my other T34 is #0 001 776 and the front beam serial number is 2157. I'd really like to check both of my T34 rear axle serial numbers to set some concrete numbers.
BTW, the Type 3 chassis # chart does not correspond to the known numbers on my Ruby T34. The chart says end of Sep 61 should be VIN #0 002 051, end of Oct 61 should be #0 003 991, & end of Nov 61 should be #0 007 184. So you can see that by this guide my #0 001 776 would have been built in mid-Sep 61 but the birth certificate says it was born 14 Nov 61. |

I wonder if that is because of Karmann production times. _________________ How to Post Photos

BTW, late front axle serial numbers were inked on the out surface of the right shock mount tower. I've never noticed a indent-stamped number.
So are you looking for a subframe serial number, or the transaxle serial number? |

Looking for the location of the rear axle number listed in the Chassis # chart. Would that have been on the subframe? |

Lee, I always assumed the Samba tables were the transaxle numbers, but I have never pulled out the table and crawled underneath to see and confirm.
I noticed the number series is the same for Type 3 as for Type 34, but that doesn't answer your question. |

IIRC, there are numbers under where the front transmission mount attaches to the subframe - I used to have a subframe that was not attached to a car but it's in California now.
I searched through my photos and didn't seem to take any of this area and I think it'd be a right bitch to find installed in the car. |

The number will be on the right side of the transmission theres a flat area (sometimes covered in layers of gear oil) should look like this
This is the transmission serial number as far as I know there are no numbers on the actual subframe
Hope this helps _________________ Wow look at that THAT'S A "SHOW CAR"!!

Kris - on the subframe that you now have - check out the area around where the two studs come out of the middle for the front trans mount. I recall seeing numbers... |

Ok so on the three subframes I have out (not under cars)one has no numbers and the other two have what I would call "casting numbers" on the center mount and yes your right there on the top side of the subframe just behind the mount _________________ Wow look at that THAT'S A "SHOW CAR"!!

Phil, the early cars were stamped thru at least 64, as my T-34 still had it's original front beam in place. I never knew there was a rear stamped number, so I didn't go looking for it.
I have pics of the front stamping in my build thread and in my gallery. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
