I don't know if it is the same brand as the WW one, but I bought mine for my '71 at EIS and it is branded Airtec. I set the pushrod the same protrusion as the one I removed and bolted everything up and it works great. |
So I've got the same question. Is the WW booster the same as Airtec? One thing that spooks me is the photos on the Airtec sold by Jbugs and the "WW brand" both show the same blue attach point on the front end. That's not conclusive but suggests they're the same.

Don’t know for sure, but common sense tells me that 2 manufacturers wouldn’t start building these at roughly the same time with a similar look for such a small market. I suspect the WW is an Airtec.

I am confused by the EIS vacuum statement regarding the warranty. There is no vacuum limiter on these buses and most build more vacuum than the warranty allows.

I wondered about that statement too, but had no idea how much vacuum is usually generated (just now realizing I could have measured it easily...). Do many other cars have vacuum limiters?
Perhaps that's why the poster's on the original thread had problems with the Airtec booster - too much vacuum for it. If so, is there an aftermarket vacuum regulator you could put in-line, like the fuel pressure-regulator I have between my fuel pump and my 34Pict, that might make it work better?
Obviously they should have designed it for the working pressure in the bus, but given our limitations, might that be a workable solution? Maybe that's why that booster works for some and not others - variation in vacuum developed in their intake manifolds.
Anybody tried that or have any thought on whether it would work?

holy crap dude....
I haven't followed every brake booster thread you've resurrected but why not send your booster out to be rebuilt?
I posted somewhere that these fit like ass, the mounts aren't right. I would rather have a german one rebuilt than use this pile of disappointment

Guess I drank the koolaid, got sucked in by the hype. It'd be nice to have a new one, but you're right - it looks like a sendout rebuild will be the way to go. Thanks for your input.

that will be your best bet really. I used one for a client when they were first out to market. it was horrible. I don't think you'll be let down by a rebuild

So the Bentley stresses the importance of that clearance, but doesn't say how to measure it. Once you put the pieces together you can't see those parts. Do you go by feel from the other end of the booster?
You can see the piston through the ports for the resoirvior, set the clearance before putting the resoirvior on.

Skills, I think you are thinking of the Brazilian booster. These Airtec ones fit just fine, work just fine. Any marginally competent shade tree mechanic such as myself can replace one in a few hours. ( Time Includes M/C replacement and brake bleeding)

Again I say: If you replace the old one with a new Airtec, which bolts right up and works fine by the way, simply measure how much your old push rod protrudes from the face of the booster, grab your 7mm and 8mm wrenches and adjust the new one to that length and you are off to the races.
