Here’s my 76 Westy High Top. The interior was stripped when I bought it but I currently have some 71 compmobile interior insides I’ve acctually taken off the high top to repair all the rust that was cause by the mounting rivers they installed. When it’s going back on I’m not using any rivets and it will be bolted aswell as held in place with convertible roof clips. Wish me luck.

What's going on with the back of that top?

Looks like maybe you're fiberglassing in a rear roofrack section to enclose it?

Don't mess around with bolts and clips. Since you're doing fiberglass work anyway, fill the old screw/rivet holes and install the top with panel bonding adhesive. I used Evercoat Maxim 813 when installing the top onto my '75 four and a half years ago, worked awesome and the top isn't going ANYWHERE...

Found a factory installed highroof project last October in my neighbourhood.

After removing the highroof, the area's which needed most attention showed. Guess Volkswagen did not intend that these cars would survive more then 40 years when designing the gutters with folding strip for highroof.

Rebuild the gutters. Highroof is going to be removable so the original mounting is removed and will stay out.

Cool

Hello all. I found this hightop locally. I really would like to be able to still sleep in a upper bunk like I can in my westy. Does anyone know if you can sleep "upstairs" with this style of high top? There doesn't seem to be enough room. It looks like its primary designed for head room and storage. I just want to confirm with someone that is familiar with this style.

Does anyone know the make of this hightop? I really like the look of it. I believe this is a French bus.

First time VW Bus owner. Not sure what this one is yet (1978). No rear side windows, no side windows on the HighTop.

What have I gotten myself into?

It's too late to be asking that question, Ritchie.

Welcome Ritchie, congrats on the Bus!

Post some good photos of the inside, underneath, and engine area when you can.

Happy Birthday Suzanne!

Interior is completely gone by previous owner. Mice and water damage. Underneath is solid. Engine was replaced sometime in its life with a Subaru EA82 Carb.

Rad was rear mounted and the "conversion expert" welded a cross beam to support the rad to the rear bumper brackets. Cant access the second bolt to remove the bumper. Also same expert moved the engine support beam back to support the Subaru engine. They used one original bolt hole and WELDED the member to the chassis. Cant drop the engine either.

I see a grinder in the near future. I'll start a build thread.

-Ritchie.

That is a “Getaway” conversion, or at least the roof is. I think they were assembled somewhere here in BC. I’ve seen a few of them around, a user on the forums here named “rusty busty” has a champagne-edition version with different windows.

Nice bus, good luck!
