Watched numerous videos on how to adjust the shifter, and tried with both the stock and the EMPI trigger shifter, and when the car is in gear, or feels like it is in gear, I can't get it to roll forwards or backwards in anything other than 1st gear. The trans was rebuilt and has zero miles on it since rebuild. It is a super street freeway flyer, so I don't know if it's something to do with the superdiff? I took the spark plugs out thinking it was the compression of the engine that was acting as a brake, but nothing. I don't have my brakes bled or even hooked up so it can't be that, and when it's in neutral it rolls fine. Anyone have any ideas? _________________ “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. I dont think you can effectively adjust your shifter without being able to drive the car, although you now have a preliminary adjustment that may be fine, or not. Im not sure that not being able to roll the car while in gear proves anything. I think you have the motor bolted on to the transmission? Why not get it running so you can try the different gears? Probably should get the brakes functioning before that. I shouldnt confess this, but when I got the pan done for my fiberglass buggy, I put a milk crate in it for a seat, supported the steering column on my lap, my 6 year old daughter, and my 9 year old son sat on the pan, and we drove it around the block. My wife was not home at the time. My friend that lives around the block, heard the motor and came running out to watch and give a thumbs up. That was 20 years ago. Im sure the kids will never forget it. |

If you do add a large sump, be sure you can cool the extra oil with another oil cooler. Otherwise, it could warm up real slow, then once hot you'll never be able to cool the huge amount of thermal mass with the stock cooler and fan.
Sumps are good to add oil capacity so that on aggressive acceleration or hard cornering you don't get any oil starvation, which is why you see them in drag racing and on high hp engines. If you are just chasing cooling on a relatively stock buggy engine, adding a cooler and a filter/plumbing can increase your "cool-able" oil capacity by double, while maintaining ground clearance.
Having a sump ripped off by a rock doesn't help your capacity or your cooling _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

I called up Strictly Foreign and since the trans is rebuilt and has new synchros and stuff it is going to be extremely stiff and it won’t receive oil up to the top of the transmission unless the motor is running which I can’t do at the moment since not wired so that explained everything. Basically it’s a roller at the moment but everything is all good. _________________ “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. That makes sense about getting it cooled back down again. Thanks Matt. _________________ “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”

Well, the bug has moved onto a new home this morning. My neck and my back are getting progressively worse so it’s time to move on to a different hobby or take a break. I’d still really like to have a VW in the future since I’ve put a lot of time and effort into them and learned a lot, so maybe a Manx isn’t out of the question but for now I’m going to take a break, take care of my health and my daughter and get fat by the fireplace. Thanks for all the well-wishes and advice!

Everyone deserves a break! Hope you get better and can work on it again whichever direction you decide to go in.
Peace!

Noooo, you were making such huge strides. Now I totally understand. Having a newborn is a lot of work and stress on a household. I have had 2 kids and they are only young once!!! There are lots of bugs out there and future projects. Take care of yourself first, and down the road pick up the tools again. Life is a journey, God has your back and a plan.
I dragged our daughter all over the Pacific Northwest to all the Bug shows when she was still in a stroller. I had to plan her naps around the drive to a from the shows in Seattle. All she was interested in was seeing a purple bug. Vibrant Colors are very Important to a 2 year old. I had purchased my 79 before I got married, and finished the bug when the daughter was about 2. My wife wouldn’t let me take the little one for a cruise for fear we would get crushed by an SUV, so I had to wait till the kids were older. Enter the “rest” phase of my hobby. The bug sat in the garage, I took it to work on sunny days here an there and just waited. Finally when the son came along and turned 6 years old I finally was able to drag him to the Woodburn VW show. He loved it, we had a great time. He is now 16 and has mastered the VW manual transmission. Now I have to decide if I want to let him drive this on his own. That is where I am at in my decision. However he turned out to be more of an Audi fan than air cooled addict. But that is another story. Its all about the father son/daughter time spent together. Every step is precious!!! Hours spent in the garage waxing the bug or wife’s “Pearl” for Pacific Waterland.
So life is an adventure with lots of bumps and bruises but also so many highlights.

Yes it was sold to a father and son who the dad works on Porsches and has a Class-11 style car of his own and they want to do a father/son project to complete it. So like I said it did go to a good home. I had fun with it, but it did get a bit long in the tooth at the end there. Sometimes you just want a nice clean project and a clean garage to work in haha. This week I have been cleaning the garage real nice and making space in the extra 1.5 bays and I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a Berrien Nostalgia chassis and a Meyers Manx body to put on top of it and having a nice clean dune buggy project to do this winter in time for the spring. I have also realized if I want to do some real off-roading like I had my mind set on, then I'd like something a bit more comfortable and capable like a new Bronco so I'll probably go that route for my trailblazing needs in the future. _________________ “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
