I re-read this part of the story again, and here is what I can make out of that sentence... Randy Ingrasoll of a desert community in California did own the Inch Pincher III at one time, which is a 1953 Split Window (as Dave mentioned), and he does own a red stretched single cab with real Fuchs. Now, Randy never sold this car to Todd and Mike, or at least it was never repainted, street raced and crashed, as it still remains today, totally original with all of the original paint and lettering. Prior to this, the car was bought and sold a few times, Kris Klingaman owned it, and it sat at BFY for years, and ended up in Florida for years as well (Kevin Jeanette), until Gino Garcia puchased it and sold it to Flat 4 in Japan (as Dave mentioned as well), where it is today. |
ahh, randys flatbed, takes me back to my old Pomona swap meet days.
Funny because I just scanned the pic the other day with Rich50's split on the back.

yep. i was a second slower than the Inch Pincher. was lots of fun racing against chevys and such. we used a lot of home made stuff back then,as not many companies were into fabbing stuff for vw's. i bought as much berg stuff that i could get my hands on . a hurst could be had cheap. broke some nose cones. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

tom simon and b ramsey,,, i appreciate knowing that i have stirred up some really cool, historical, and incredibly popular (in the vw world at least-- hondas and toyotas do not have TRUE, REAL AND INCREDIBLY INNOVATIVE heros or icons) like we, *vw people, have. it is a shame to go to theese import events, witness things like literally hundreds of thousands of people, espn, huge vendor displays, and all the excitement of the nhra and so on,, all to experience these cars running blistering times of 6, 7, 8,, 9 second cars,,, which is cool.... dont get me wrong,, but, the mass majority of the spectating audience has no idea of OUR contribution to the "import cash cow"... i mean that,,, WE WERE RACING FIRST! WAAAAY EARLIER THAN DATSUN/NISSAN, MAZDA, TOYOTA AND THE LIKE.. AND THAT WE WERE DOING IT WITH 40 HORSE MOTORS.. NO VTEC , OR ANY OF THAT "FRONTWHEELDRIVEWITHWHEELIEBARSANDSKINNYREARTIRESANDFATSLICKSONTHEFRONTCRAP".....
THEY *IMPORT PEOPLE, have no freaking clue of what a little racecar straped to the roofrack of a early 60s bug called "littlebutfast" is all about... they can keep their cold air intakes,, and their full surround sound, earthQUake bass, race engine, sitting 4 deep inside the car with the windows rolled up while they are "chillen" in the staging lanes at a race... who wants to do that? i mean fun is waiting like 2 hours to make a pass, in the heat.....
ooh my bad,, i went on a wild tangient...
but as i was saying , thanks tom simon and also bramsey for "backing my story up"... and i will try to get the pics scanned from todd.....
peace out |

There is a good sized article about VW drag racing in the August 2007 issue of Hot Rod magazine. Good pics, history, stuff like that.

Excellent read my friends....if anyone is interested those nostalgic drag pictures were in the June 2004 HotVws...there is a great shot of Darrell Vittone driving the IP Too in I/Gas at Englishtown. The following page has Dean driving the IP in H/Gas from 1966 (the caption refers to the car retaining the oval rear window and matching doors...and soon after that race Empi installed the larger rear window, later doors and fiberglass hood w/tach). These guys are all true legends. Great stuff. |

Oh, Man, I can hear Andy humming the theme from "Sanford and Son" right now...
hey Tom, you- know- what still sux.
And you-know-who is still pushin' up pansies...
Yeah, I think good discourse (spelled arguing) is good, as long as it doesn't get too mean-spirited.
I thank the original poster again, if nothing else, it has made people think, and dig, and investigate.
I would still love to see photos of what you have sir, even if it isn't the original Inch Pincher, it's still probably something pretty damn cool... Hey "therealonevwnut", don't feel bad about repeating a story, trying to stitch together facts to solve a mystery. Good job on posting it, and good job getting others who have done a lot of previous research intrigued enough to post... and dispute, which is fine. This thread has been very inforamative and interesting for the rest of us to read.
I know Randy's truck from back in the 80's...
I talked to Todd and his partner the last time they had the white-blue fade to checkers painted pro stock at Sacramento, maybe back in 1996 or so. The door fell off during one of the burn outs and got banged up, maybe Todd remembers that. Anyhow, they never could get that car to go for some reason, but usually qualified at the lower half of the feild... no shame in that, PS was a real tough class with some real tough customers.
I also heard about the criminal stuff (through the vw racer's grapevine), tragic to say the least.
I remember when they loaned the PS chassis to Andy Costello, who built an engine and had some great outings and wins with that car (RIP Andy).
Agian, thanks for starting a good thread ---Tom |

i bought an engine from todd back in the early 90's he told me about an inch pincher that they had and rolled it. i thought he said they turned it into a baja. i still have that engine and it still runs. still stamped BBS RACING. he still had that blue race car and was building another for his wife i think. |

Seems like that truck used to sit in Riverside back in the 80's. Maybe at Car Craft or Save-a-bug? |

Ivan, you can plainly see the big window, but look at the windshield opening- its definitely '57 or earlier (even though you are a Bus guy, I'll bet you can still see that..)
It's been well documented that the original Inch Pincher, when it got it's first facelift, had (as was the custom in the day) the Oval window, replaced with a laterger, "square" window.
and I don't know what hapened to the truck Don Haight had...I know he was researching the authenticity, and had found the dips in the bed where the rear tire of the race car were supposed to go, then he just kinda dropped out of sight... |
I did notice the "combo" and thus didn't elaborate on the previous "statement" of said pictures depicting an oval!?!
Anyway, though bugs are okay with me, you know my true interest is this particular SC as opposed to the fatchick triple axled one! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I used to live down the street from Randy in Palm Desert. When he sold that flat bed, we all freaked. He used to park a shorty bus on it with matching paint/fuchs. He had a whole bunch of cool cars at the house. I used to skate with his son, Jamie.
Back on topic...
*edit* I seem to remember that truck going to Virginia... I see now it's in Florida... what a trip seeing that picture! |
