Gary89er, welcome! and thanks for your interest in my thread!! If you have the time, start up a build thread and post some pictures. I’d be happy provide any information I can. I’m starting the job of replacing the heater channels lately and experiencing the fun of aftermarket parts. Good luck! |
Hey, don't feel bad about losing momentum on your project. I have had mine for 11 years now and am really just now getting started on the serious repair work on the chassis. Time flies and it seems like every time you get started again, life steps in and sends you on a different course. So far, your work has been impressive and I hope you get to start back up on it soon. |

Hi @T8kitease (Matt),
I’m currently working through a 67 build and I am still in the early stages of the chassis repairs.
Any chance you could DM your plans for the front chassis jig that you made up, I’ll have to make that up myself as I will be cutting mine off too.
Cheers

what I thought to be a simple pan replacement is turning into a can-of-worms for me at home. but reading/learning from this thread gives me the encouragement to go forward with a frame head restoration/replacement. thank you! _________________ Current VW projects:

Thanks for the interest! Unfortunetly, Its still in the same state as my last work post. Life has really pushed her to the far corner of my garage. I've said it before but hope to have the time to work on it again in the fall. By the time im ready I'll need to re-paint my chassis. _________________ Matt

Thanks!!
I've been neglecting this build thread ( without responding to others, sorry guys ) and havent had time to work on my project lately. Its almost been a year . My goal is to be back on it this fall because its perfect weather to be in the garage around here!
If you need any measurments on the jig I'd gladely help you out. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for looking and good luck on your project! _________________ Matt

Great build thread you have here. We seem to have some of the same issues with our cars. Great idea on the frame head jig. Think I might use it myself. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Decided to upload some more pics to get up to speed, Area under rear window thats in need of some TLC!!! The spot welds that attach the back side of the luggage panel are visible with help of a 3M roloc disc.
Spot welds drilled out
Spot welds drilled out along the bottom section where luggage panel sits on top of rear crossmember
Scraps leftover
Garage space is getting a little cramped

We seem to be missing some of your most recent pics here. Liking your work and a luggage tray replacement is on my future. _________________ -Tim

Passenger side quarter, some accident damage was repaired with a dent puller and covered with a 1/2 inch of bondo. Chipped it right out

I had replace that quarter too!
The damage looked identical, actually... only mine was the driver's side.
(TOTAL PITA)
You can check out what I did in my build thread in my sig if you want... Though you'll probably put my work to shame...
KICKASS BUILD, btw.

Matt:
We will be out of town for a few days and will get back to you upon our return. i did attempt to e-mail you with questions re the Jig dimensions and list of materials. Also whether I was interpreting your photo re cutting in front of the old Nap hat on the frame head and addition of material prior to welding the new Nap hat/frame head? Aside from vertical & horizontal what were your key reference points since removal of your body?
Keep up the great work!

haha looks good!
and you can't beat that california condition!
my 71' was never taken out of California, and I thought I had a bad time since it had a 5"x3" rust hole under the battery that I had to cut/weld...
I have to hand it too you, if mine was like that, I would not have known where to start!
also, another reason I'm not gunna drive it in the winter, you know they put salt on the roads here!?!?!??! cars + salt = dumb, and a rust bucket...
and they said I can't use chains here..... _________________ 1971 Super Bug |
