Just a quick update, in a short while the Ghia will be going up for sale. Just need to do a couple of odd-jobs like replace a tempremental relay and adjust the steering stops on the rack before advertising it.
It's been a blast and I've enjoyed Ghia ownership greatly but it's time for a new challenge - not straying too far as I've started the hunt for Porsche 914 which I can use to compete in Autocross so I will still be hanging around TheSamba The hardest part will be coming up with a price for my Ghia ! _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

Rebuilt the rocker assembly with a new spring washer, then stumbled onto the next problem. When I took the rocker cover off, all but one of rockers were closed completely. I tried to open the gaps but the adjusters wouldn't move enough. On closer examination there were some pedestal shims in place but not it seems the right amount. I added another 0.015" and the adjusters now gap up to 0.006" nicely.
It seems there's still plenty for me to learn new things about ACVW every time I tinker with mine
Who knows, if the rockers didn't have any clearances then the valves may not have been sealing fully when closed at higher revs. It'll be interesting to see if this makes a difference now. |
In a true case of "a little knowledge his a dangerous thing" it turns out that I have chromoly pushrods (steel) which need to be adjusted to 0" free when cold (no gap but pushrods can still spin). Add this to a dodgy starter motor causing an interesting noise that needed hunting down, plus some impromptu open-tunnel surgery to re-weld the front and mid clutch tube welds and it's been an interesting few weeks.
Finally all tucked up and back on the road

Cr@p Spring washer broke on 3,4 luckily it stayed in the rocker cover. Should replace with solid shaft in the long term but the standard ones will go back on for now _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |
