White is high beam, yellow is low. And the dash light should go to the white.

Even though it didn't look right to me, I wired it according to the '66 wiring diagram which has the colors reversed. After the picture was taken, I swapped them around and now it looks proper.

Looks like it's been awhile since I've updated this thread. I haven't done much work in the last year, just mostly driving it.

I added a dimmer switch from a '66 to the turn signal, since I can't operate the foot switch.

I fabricated a set of hand controls that look a little more period correct.

I really wanted to save the '64 only seat upholstery, but it was getting pretty bad from regular use. I recovered them with TMI covers and pads.

A roof rack popped up for sale on craigslist, so I picked that up along with a bunch of VW tools (the guy used to be a VW mechanic back in the day).

That brings everything up to date. I've been gathering parts for a big bore 40hp, so hopefully I can put that together this winter.

Since I drive the car after dark on occasion, I decided to upgrade the headlights. I went with Autopal Cibie z-beam knock-offs, because I wanted the OEM look curved glass, and after searching a bit found some LED h4 replacements that work on 6 volts. Now I can see at night.

I have what looks like a Saxomat user/installation manual. It outlines adjustments and the like. It's very detailed for all of it's 16 pages. Including one that was hand typed and stapled to the trouble shooting page Very Happy
It's copyright date is 1/61.

I have no use for it other than it was the right price at the right time. So I bought it thinking of this thread.

Nice that the Saxomat serves your special needs.

Took the Bug to Symco Weekender a traditional hot rod and kustom show. Only pre-'65 period correct cars are allowed. No trophies are awarded, just getting in is the prize. Since they aren't familiar with VWs, I had to show them my vehicle registration to prove it's a '64.

Yes, the torque converter is a definite advantage on the autostick. I liked drivng it in city traffic ... no shifting.

It's working good so far. I still need to tweak the adjustments because there's a slight grind going into reverse and 2nd gear takes a little finesse to find.

I've got an autostick in my trike. They do drive pretty similar. But there's no skipping gears with the Saxomat, you definitely need to start out in first.

So, how is the Saxomat working for you? My convertible was an autostick for the first few years that I owned it.

Anyway cool car. I just picked up a metal sunroof '64 myself and look forward to getting it on the road!

I had to install the hand controls. You've probably never seen a '64 with 2 pedals either. Very Happy

I think I've finally got the clutch and shifter adjusted properly. I've put over 100 miles on it so far.

Pedal to the metal.

Off-the-shelf hand controls don't work well with pedals hinged at the floor, so I had to make a couple modifications.

I finally washed it today.

I picked a '64 carcass clean ( its from a junkyard in MN) and have one of those stripy seatbacks. the bottom was black I think.

Pulled the engine to clean out the mouse nest under the tin. While it was out I painted the tin, cleaned the fan shroud, freshened the hoses, replaced the muffler, and added a couple things.

Making a little more progress. Swapped out the hacked up radio delete plate for a nicer one.

Started mocking up the Saxomat parts on a spare transmission. All I had was the brackets, the rest is autostick and misc. hardware.
