74thing, thanks for all the info, After I will consider some different emulsion tubes. I need less holes at the top or smaller air jet.
Hotstreet, I did try out some ida's before, but I went back to idf's, as I really wanted to go as fast as i could with non race stuff. I know the ida's work great, but i just wanted to see how fast i can go with idf's. The ida's that i tried out but not ever at the track do have the third progression hole.
Erik G, Thanks! And yes you got that right, that part of the video is on winding way east of Sunrise blvd and west of Hazel. I'm glad you recognize the sound too, Part of that is having as much compression as the gas will take,a ignition that will burn anything, and having the carbs synched perfect. |

congrats on the little girl, and good fitting name! Can't tell for sure but that video coming home from the track looks like winding way by my folks house. I've seen and heard a lot of VW's at Sac Raceway over the last 25 years, and yours has that sound that makes me know it's gonna be a nice pass. I'll be sad if it does indeed close

Congrats to Jeff and his family! I hope all of you are doing well.
For the leaning out in the upper rpm range problem it seems you have addressed the pump and fuel line size issues.
Are there any restrictions in the tank such as the small fitting on the outlet or possible filter/screen inside?
There was a comment about venting the tank to a proper size so there would be no restrictions in flow in the upper rpms. That is something to look at and should be able to test easily by loosening or removing the gas cap temporarily.
Is it possible there is something going on with the floats (sticking or a float adjustment necessary that got out of wack) or float bowls or restrictions on the carb inlets or larger needle/seats needed?
You are running 38 venturis and I am assuming your jetting is close with the exception of something happening in the upper rpms. There was a suggestion about changing emulsion tubes. This may be something to look closely at as well since some will enable richer mixtures in the upper rpm range. Per David Vizard, "Hold the tube upside down (main jet up).
The top of the emulsion tube now represents the top of the rpm range and the bottom end the bottom of the rpm range.
Where there are holes the mixture will be leaner.
Where there are no holes it will be richer.
You should be able to home in on the right tube now really quickly."
Just trying to throw some things out there to think about and consider to get this resolved and running even better.

If I hadn't got an AFR gauge on my turbo motor it would have been impossible. My motors a nightmare to tune. Bizarrely it only likes 1 combo of jets. It's 1 of those motors that really needs injection but it's finding the time to do it. Plus it's means spending more of me hard earned cash on it which I don't want to do.

I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. You may not get the most efficient/productive use out of the engine without one though. It also decreases the time involved when you know what direction to go, or give you valuable data when trying to solve/troubleshoot an issue.
I need to get one. When I upgraded the fuel system in the 67 I now have, it pulled exponentially harder past 5k than it did before, and I dropped at least a jet size on the mains/idles. The car drove fine below 4k before, and we would have never really found the issue if it wasn’t taken to the track. |

I made a mistake when I only answered your question with just the 1 answer. I should have also mentioned that its not just at the end of the track in 4th gear, its in every other gear also starting at 4k like clockwork as its a carb tuning issue, not fuel supply to carbs or venting. But it was cool never the less to get some ideas from you, ivkings and Hotstreet
Every gear goes like this:
idles 13:1 to 2500rpms then 11-12:1 mains(170 with F2) to 4k and airs 13.8-14:1(1.7) from 4k and up.
My 4k up is lean, but it started at 15.8 when I first put the wideband on and I worked the airs down from 2.0 to 1.7 |
This is where a lot fall short of not using any type of a/f gauge. If you don’t know, you don’t know. You can’t tune what you don’t know.
