Hey guys, I'm brand new to the aircooled vw world and bought a 68 squareback... It's already been lowered and has a narrowed adjustable front beam that seems to be a type 1 beam.. the problem is the wheel isn't centered, it's closer to the firewall... Is this common when folks do the type 1 beam swaps? If so is there a easy fix for this?? Thanks for helping a FNG yall..

You should post some pictures. Anyone would just be guessing...

If the beam is narrowed, of course it will be closer.

The fix -- put a Type 3 beam back in it.

maybe this is where my ignorance will show itself.. but how does it being narrowered have anything to do with it being back of center in the wheelwell.. i thought it could be a caster issue or something.. I guess my question is for the guys who have type 1 beams on their type 3s is there a way to correct this without just going back to a type 3 beam.. thanks..

ps.. not trying to start with a type 3 beam vs type 1 beam argument.. just trying to get some insight..

It has probably been in a wreck and the frame head that the beam bolts to is bent.

I was wondering about problem before I started my type 1 conversion. Being the type 3 beam sat in rubber casing and it sat maybe an inch more toward the front of the car. Would the type 1 beam make the tires sit out of center in the wheel well? According to this pic yes. That I can think of, no easy fit other then spacing behind the beam in the horns. I'm not done with my beam yet to compare spacing.

Not a t-1 beam guy, but yes, it's a caster angle issue that you're running up against. A fix would be to add more rubber to the back side of the beam. Note; this is the same issue regular t-3 guys run into when dropping the beam more than 3 splines up front. After a 2 spline drop, you're basically out of caster (it's built into the beam mounts). Some of the good t-1 beam conversion guys already know this, and build that into their beams. Shocked

Mine actually does the opposite. The lower the front gets the more the trailing arm angle increases which tends to pull the wheels forward. My car is a little lower than yours though, I'll have to look and see how the front wheels are positioned adjusted at a driving height
