Anywhere secret and creative and easy access for you. I hide mine somewhere in the chassis, in a tiny zip lock bag full of grease.

Carefull with access and breaking the zip tie, it might be harder then you think in the middle of nowhere in the least convenient time and place.

Hide it in the car.

These are 5 second entry cars from outside.

If you have stock alloys, in the rear center cap (with some cushion) hides it in not so plain sight but easy to retrieve. Power mirrors, double sided tape to the back of the glass.

I hide my spare key in my pocket on the same ring as my Toyota fob.

In a magnetic key box somewhere strategic underneath (not divulging specific location on a publicly-accessed forum).

Key in a heavier ziplock bag than a standard ziplock snack bag. Then aluminum duct taped to a secret spot, then sprayed with cosmoline..
I can't even find or see the key knowing close to where it's at.

If itโ€™s a stick shift you can leave the keys in the ignition

Thanks all! I love the responses--my favorite is "if it's a stick shift, leave them in the ignition!"

Mine is under the van but after reading this thread there are good places to hide a key so I wouldnโ€™t need to crawl under the van.

Guilty as charged.

Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro).

Yep. I do not need to go under the bus for mine...

How about a magnetic holder on the backside of the rear license plate door, or just inside? Not sure I want my spare key smeared with grease in a zip-loc baggie!

I think a lot of thieves don't know that the Vanagon rear licence plate holder is a door on hinges. Anywhere that you can squeeze your hand into through that licence plate door to securely hide a key, whether in a magnetic container or secured in some fashion, is likely a good place.

In addition to the "clean and easy" approaches, the Vanagon body structure has so many good places to hide a key, provided you are ready to lie on your back to fish it out.

Over the years, with all the used vehicles I have owned or helped repair, I have found so many "hidden" keys hidden by prior owners while doing repairs. So, it seems it's important also to remember where you hid that emergency key.

B When I go underneath I pee my pants
iii. ....I cant remember
