On the same topic, I have a new top for my '63 but the seam at the front is creeping up and away from the front edge. Any reason? Cheap top or improper install? It was installed just before I got it and the more I use it the further away from the front edge the seam gets! So who makes the best top?

Got a canvas top from WCM about 8 years ago when I lived in Phoenix. I live in OK now and even after years of exposure to the sun it still is in good condition.

I just vacuum it once in a while to get the dust out before I wash the car.

Originally, VW used rivets to secure the cover material to the front header bow. These days, most people use a poor contact cement to glue it down. Probably a comination of incorrect glue and the cover is too tight.

Which material is proper for which years? Pinpoint vinyl vs. Stayfast canvas.

3M adhesive came as a suggestion when I inquired a few months ago. After you spray it on both surfaces, let it sit for a few minutes before attaching the parts together. Many times during assembly, most people spray the adhesive then attach the material & header bow together instantaneously without allowing the glue to tack up. This doesn't allow the adhesive to bond as well as it should

In my gallery I've posted the manual for a 59. I used rivets to secure the replacment one I got from BFY. The manual has info re adjusting the tension so the front dosent lift.

The adhesive I used when I put my last (canvas) top on was that Automotive Goop stuff. It really held that top on strong. Actually, since the top turned out to fit so poorly at first, I had to un-glue it and re-do it after a while, and that Goop held it on so well that it was very hard to get off. I've had much worse results with general contact cements over the years.

I looked at your gallery and those pages from the manual look great! I assume they are applicable to '63. As you can see, I have two issues; the first bow doesnt look to be installed properly and the front edge is creeping back. (I may have a third issue - I dont know if this is a quality top Confused ) I'm going to print the pages from the manual and go see if I can improve this situation.

I got a vinyl top from WCCR and it fit MUCH better than the TMI top I had on before. It's also a very close match for the Ruby Red paint. They offer several colors that are matches for the factory stuff.
WCCR = West Coast Classics and Restorations.

Sometime after 56, when you went into the VW dealer to buy a cover for a 50-55 Beetle, you got a vinyl cover. Vinyl was the upgrade.
