Hey guys...
My bus (71 with 1600 dp) puts on a decent james bond smoke effect show... Doesn't do it any other time, or doesn't burn much oil... So I figure the rings are in decent shape.
Is this enough to warrant an overhaul, is the cause badly worn out valve stems/valve guides? No seals on these motors to my knowledge... Is a smoke show just part of VW ownership?
(Its been a few months without having to pull the engine, I guess I'm feeling lost without having it out...  )

mine does it every morning, it smokes for a second or 2 and then its fine. it is from oil leaking past the rings, its normal if you are in an incline with the tail down-slope. at least i hope so...

Haven't done a compression or leak down on the motor yet... saving up for a decent set.

you should be ok, if it smokes for more than a few seconds you might have a problem tho.
