Well, finally life gave me a day to fiddle with the Syncro and figure out what happened to my clutch. Got the tranny out in a not earth shattering 4.5 hours. Expectation was giving me fits to see what went wrong with a fairly young clutch. It turns out the lining completely gave way on the engine side of the clutch. It is hard to tell the exact sequence of what caused it, as it is now fairly fried and lord it does smell! So a LUK Heavy Duty Clutch is no guarantee of longevity You gets what you get.

interesting,

I've read in the Yahoo Groups of other people having similar issues with their fairly new LUK clutches...

Well, that is bad! I have seen clutch damage but not that bad (not so old clutch). Another reason for me to stay away from LUK.

Thanks for sharing Dog.

No abuse, I was on I-40 for about 3 hours, no gear changes, nothing, just cruising. It had been uneventful the entire way. No issues at the fuel stop, shifted fine up to 4th and stayed there for about 200 miles. It was not apparent until I had to slow and down shift in Kingman for construction. Some of the crispy effect is from trying to coax the Syncro off the freeway for the last mile or so to a safe to be towed from spot. It apparently just cut loose all at once. No cutting at the rivets. They may have overdriven the rivets, cutting the lining so very little material was holding it to the backplate.
