|
|
Hi All,
Wondering if anyone recognizes this van. I pulled the tranny yesterday and as you can see it is super clean, so potentially a recent rebuild.
Would love to know more information if anyone recognizes it.
TIA

Yes. Pull n Save. I have the tranny though.
A buddy and I grabbed various bits and pieces but there is still a lot on it.

Just got back from the yard, thought I'd give a rundown.
Body's in good shape except the right rear quarter, all suspension bits are there, the front seats and door cards are just about perfect (blue/light blue checker-looking interior), middle bench and rear non-bed bench in good shape. The dash is the old style, dirty but didn't appear to have cracks. It's got the non-power steering wheel, bigger than a power wheel and in decent shape. The upper grill is good as well. The motor is intact. It also has the overhead front A/C.
I went out there on the off chance that the rear bumper was in better shape than mine, and it actually was. It had been hit and was a bit wrinkly, but not nearly as bad as mine. I pulled it and walked in to pay, and was told that it would require me forking over $55 American Dollars, non-negotiable. I promptly returned it to the yard. It's crazy, they have always had great prices there, but that was not a good price, at least not for a cheap bastard like myself. _________________ Joe T.

No pwr windows.
Seems to me I'd heard the changed their prices in the last year or so.
I used to go there every couple weeks to get mk2 golf/jet bits and the prices this time were I'd say at least 50% higher. Of course it always seems like it just depends on who rings you up... |

Yeah, I lived off that place and ebay for a while back in 2001/2002 and loved that the pricelist was on the website. No more.
Still - can't beat $100 for a tranny.

I think they just have a flat rate for "bumper covers" so they charge the same thing for a 25 year-old dented up sheet of chrome-plated steel that they do for those big plastic covers that are on newer vehicles.
That's a great deal on the transmission though.
Does anybody else ever get bummed out when you see a completely save-able Vanagon in a yard? Granted, it rarely happens anymore, but still... _________________ Joe T.

Just think about all the perfect splitties that went to the crusher years back. Makes ya sick. They were sitting on a gold mine and didn't even know it. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. I remember a lot of Westies going through the pull and save (the pick and pull)
some with obvious engine fires, but back then a Syncro was a expensive dream and a normal vanagon was nothing but a slow brick to me. _________________ lots of VW's |

Dude, me too. Still do as a matter of fact being a college student, pulled many axles, mirrors, and other things I knew I could resell.
I don't go to that pull'n'save much anymore, after getting surprised by the prices on some things like that.

Only if its a westy. Non-westy's are only good for westy donor parts in my mind. _________________ '91 Carat Westy

I'm sure this ain't your first rodeo, but always negotiate the price BEFORE you pull a part.
I've found that parts are magically worth a lot more once they have been detached from the vehicle. They assume that since you've already put in the work to pull it, they can get a little gouge in. |

This place is two miles from my house, and I've been going there for six years or so. There has never been any need to negotiate in the past; everything's always been very cheap. _________________ Joe T.

Fixed price list. They don't make up a part price on the spot, they pull it from the list. _________________ '91 Carat Westy

Gotcha - back in TX and around here before land values priced all the chopshops out of the market, it was usually up to the discretion of whoever was behind the counter at the time and there was always haggle room. |
