Im currently running a 1996 ej22 in my syncro with nearly 18k trouble free miles in the van, But now its starting to show signs of a not so well ej22, Using a little oil and giving the odd cough and splutter, Ive been more than happy with that little engine giving its all but now i feel my van would benifit from somthing a little newer, So im looking now to fit a ej25 but i dont really want to go through building a loom again And here is my question,, Can i run the ej25 using my exsisting ej22 wiring loom?
Regards Andy,

You can run a 2.5 short block w/ your existing heads and create a high comp hybrid 2.5 (11:1 IIRC). I dont think you can expect to see any significant gains from this change. Particulars abound on the net for this conversion. Try searching in:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/archive/index.php/f-87.html

If you do it let us know how it works!

I have read up on the Frankenstein and its one of those things u just gotta do to see what happens.

As for running a 2.5 with 2.2 electronics I would really like to be informed as to why not. I have never sat the 2 engines next to each other but they both need fuel air and spark. Does the 2.5 run the same impedance injectors with same connectors? Is the crank trigger or Coolant temp sensor different? If you are able to move the important senors over and run the 2.5 injectors with the 2.2 spark setup I say why not.

Many people ask about this and aways ask about the 2.2 intake mani fitting and I don't understand why you wouldn't utilize the 2.5 long-block as is with the 2.2 electronics. Is this subaru voodoo

Thats my thinking too, Ive never looked at a 2.5 and my only concerns i had was if the main connectors were the same shape and all, I can only assume that 2.5 injctors are the same as 2.2inj's as this will all be adjusted via the ecu altering the pusle width according to the other sensor's, Smile

its obd11, so it should be okay--read up in a manual--talk to line mechs-- does the 2.5 have 2 cam sensors for the dohc? how about knock sensor?
go to outfront racing and ask ron or callem.

Read what SammyDaFish (at end of thread) has to say about the combo in question:

http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=7341

There is lots of talk about mixing parts and me thinks Sammy kinda hits the nail.

But, I do not know sheeet about these Subaruzers to know right from wrong....

YMMV

Cough and sputter can be caused by low fuel pressure.
An aging or binding fuel pump is common in a Vanagon.
Test the pressure to see if you have the minimum needed for that motor before ditching it.

all 96 to 99 electronics are the same. Yes, you can put a 2.5 in there and it should be plug and play. Get a 2.5 DOHC - change the head gaskets to cometic, bolt it up and you will be fine.

I have not done it, but I have recently read quite a bit on it.

That's a good writeup, thanks for posting. I've thought about trying this and now am convinced that it's not worth it. Talk about making a cross-breed an even bigger cross-breed...While my IAC has required a little cleaning, I don't think I'd want to run without one. And the 92 Octane wouldn't be worth the HP and torque gain in my opinion.

I'll stick with my 2.2.

That is too bad you just can't use the whole 2.2 intake and keep the IAC. If you could, that would make upgrading from 2.2 to the 2.5 a breeze.

Are those the thinner metal gaskets mentioned in this thread from above:

I've been doing my research on this as well and yes it will work.

From what I've researched and been told, yes the 2.2 wiring and ECU will work fine with a 2.5. This applies for '96-'99. I was told that in a subaru they have to have come from the same type of tranny, auto or manual... but that doesn't apply for our conversion. You can easily change which mode the ECU is running by grounding a pin on the ECU. My engine is from an auto car and wired up to run in manual mode... so thats an easy fix.

Another thing to consider is that some subaru cars (maybe just autos?) have some extra EGR equipment and/or some atmospheric sensors. again, I don't think it matters as I've heard people just leaving them out without trouble. My conversion has them and I kept them:

So in short, yes all '96-'99 2.2s and 2.5 in subaru powered vanagons should be interchangeable as long as the wiring is properly configured.

Yes you can run a 2.5 on your 96 2.2 wireing. You may have to unscrew your 2.2 sensors and put them in the 2.5. The engine with the most bang for buck is the 2001-2002 SOHC.
The DOHC only use one cam sensor. If you do go DOHC stay away from the 96. The heads and pistons are one year only.

man I'd love to ditch them parts. I hate vacuum operated crap! bad news, what do you do??
only other trouble with the dohc is its an interference motor so timing belts are more important.
