|
|
Hi All,
My 1971 Transporter turn signals are not working. The light on the dash comes on green when either side is turned on but none of the lights work and it does not flash. Since NONE of them ( L,R, Front or Rear ) are working I am not inclined to think its a bulb situation. But what do I know ? I am a newbie. Where should I start ? Help before I get sideswiped. LOL. Oh yrah and they were working so this is new.

Do your hazard flashers work?

Then let's go straight to the flasher relay. That should give you both turn indicators and hazards.
Homework: Find flasher relay location.

Universal flasher relays are available, but check online VW catalogues for part #s that may help you cross-reference. Bosch is the original brand.
It should be a three prong relay. But you need to see:
A) if you have one
B) if it is water-damaged _________________ www.itinerant-air-cooled.com

I found mine only after I took it out not knowing what it was cleaned all the connection and checking wires put it back in trying to get my brake lights and turn signal to work. Now I know what it is because it makes a clicking sound with the signals. _________________ 1975 Bay Window {Big Red} |

| It looks like it might be under the dash just behind the flasher knob. Have to remove my parcel tray to see closer. Am I in the right place? Feels like a little box behind the flasher knob. Hmmm. |

Thanks. I will definitely unhook the battery. If not I may be the idiot that fries the wiring trying to locate and change the flasher. Oh man please tell me its not on top the black plate covering the underside of the steering column. Ill find it eventually lol. Thanks for the hints guys.

Still cold
Hint: If your headlights will change beam listen for where the click comes from when they do, both relays are neighbors.

As a crime against originality, I might get a 1973 bus fuse/relay box and use it on my 1970. I'll keep the wiring colors all OEM.

That's crossed my mind too on more than one occasion, can't have too many fuses, but how would you mount it? In the stock location or where the 73 mounts? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

ok I will let the cat out of the bag I just happen to be working in the same spot on a 72 today. you have to lift the fuse panel CAREFULLY up and out this is why I say unhook the battery just incase you touch steel hell I do and I have been doing it for years you will see it hanging like a bat its the one in the middle.

Way to go BB , we could have played this for quite a while more and Variken would have learned all sorts of things about his bus in the process, no one even got a chance to bring up the unmentionable B word yet _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
