Can anyone tell me how to check the oil level? Owner's manual says go to your VW dealer. Bentley says check and refill if necessary but I can't find where it says how. _________________ Terry

Without looking I seem to recall that the specified level was somewhere below the fill plug. Not very handy when refilling (like being told to 'turn left 5 blocks before Main Street').
But I believe that instruction was later revised to fill to the bottom of the fill plug - so easy to refill (until it comes out) and check (then mentioned finger).
You will need something to undo the 17mm socket head plug. Either a tool for that purpose or a substitute made from a bolt & nut.

What I figured. I looked around and am not seeing the filler bolt though. _________________ Terry

Right (passenger) side of case, near the linkage.
May be wicked tight if it hasn't moved in a while. |

Sometimes, only the tool that Ahwahnee shows will remove the dang thing, because it allows more loosening torque to be applied. Shops should know better, but they tend to tighten these plugs to 100+ lbs, when the manual states 15. Personally, I use teflon tape to avoid any future knuckle bashing. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

In the field once, I used a truck's jack to get the fill plug open, so tight was it on. I put whatever wrench I had on it, and used the jack's lifting power under the wrench to rotate it. It let go with a bang that told me there was no way I would have gotten it. The owner of the truck later called the shop and gave them an earful about overtightening things. He'd also had major trouble with the lugnuts. Anyhow, with few resources at hand remember the power of the car's factory jack to move a wrench even when in the middle of nowhere. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1993 Toyota LandCruiser, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

You can debate this kind of stuff all day.
Ridiculous. Gears are lubed by splash, and 3mm difference in level won't matter. It should be 3mm of course, not 1/8. _________________ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ π π π |
