I must admit that hanging things like curtains to cover window, for the purpose of privacy (especially when sleeping in the van in un-secured locations) can be cumbersome.

Today a friend suggested that there is a kind of plastic film that can be stuck to the windows which does not dim the view from inside>out in anyway, but it makes it impossible to see IN from outside.

Has anyone heard of such a film and had experience with it?

Thanks

Most darkening films enable one to see from the lesser lit side to the brighter side.

During the day, the Van is dark while the outside is bright. If you are in the Van you can see out but those outside cannot see in.

At night, with lights on, the Van is now the brighter environment. So while you being inside cannot see out, those outside can clearly see in! Shocked

Aha.... well that would complete defeat the whole purpose. The idea is to do stuff in the van at night (including having the interior lights on) without anyone from outside being able to visually detect it.

My '58 splittie with full mirror windows may have been responsible for the rewriting of Honolulu vehicle window tint restrictions in 1969. I've never seen so many double takes, driving through Waikiki ..

i used foil covered thermal bubble wrap, had the edges covered with a cloth that i had sewed on the edges. it works great for a sun shield , privacy, and is great for the thermal characteristics. it keeps the van cooler during the day and warmer at night. it is thin light weight and inexpensive. i used velcro to hold it in place so that it is easily installed and removed. i will try to get a pic posted if you want to see what it looks like installed. had the cops stop me a few times but i used the excuse i forgot to take them down from last night and or that they are sun shields to protect the interior when i park and i forgot to take them down. never got a warning or ticket.

"This window film is silver 15% on the outside, PLUS 5% black on the inside allowing you to see out while preventing vision into the room and creating an effect similar to what you see in police interrogation rooms...

Hmmm, I guess I'm thankful that I don't have the experience to understand exactly what this film does.

I don't know the viability for this, but it might be an option

I'm willing to bet that the thermal insulative properties of curtains are far better than window film. There ain't going to be any kinds of fun stuff to look at in a cold van.

I would think hard before applying limo black tint. My van has it, and while it looks cool and allows for a lot of privacy, it really sucks when you're stuck in the van due to bad weather etc. but still want to enjoy the views outside.

It's also been partly responsible for far too many mornings of sleeping in later than I would have liked.

No way, I'm not at all interested even in a slight darkening tint... I was full clear visibility.

A friend said that there is a film that blocks the "view in" from outside, but does not affect the "view out" from inside.

Ask your friend for the name of the product.

Your girlfriends friends idea only works during the day. As explained

To be unseen at night, You need to close the curtains and turn off the lights, or use insulating pads. Either one needs to be opened during the day.

yeah, it seems GF's friend got it wrong about the night... we'll have to just stick with curtains then.

I looked into this stuff a few years ago but the product requires constant power.
