Hello from Tokyo Japan, I am beginner of this forum.
Recently I bought 74beetle 1200 STD RHD.

I have a question about the Charcoal canister of my beetle.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The pipe is from the fan housing but another pipe doesn't connect to anywhere.
Should I connect it to somewhere or it is OK not to connect?

Thank you very much.

Hello! Welcome to the forum!
That canister is part of a fuel vapor venting/recovery/recycling system for the vapors which are created by the fuel in the gas tank. Here is a general schematic of this entire system.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This forum discussion speaks about the entire system at length:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=389074
This forum discussion covers the vent lines and expansion tank which are present in the front trunk with the gas tank:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=313050
This discussion relates to the hard metal line which connects to the venting line from the trunk, across the firewall, and then the line runs down the side of the floor pan on the Right hand side underneath the car:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=583736

The charcoal canister has three pipes coming out, the larger two pipes which connect to the fan housing and connects to a pipe on the right hand side of the air cleaner box (on top of the carburetor). The photo below shows both large hoses, but does not have the smaller line.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It also should have a small pipe on the bottom of the canister which connects a fuel vapor line from the gas tank.
Here is how that small line runs in the wheel well which connects to the line which runs along the side of the floor pan. The numbered circles in this picture indicates the fender bolts which mount the line brackets in the wheel well. You can see one of the line brackets hanging near the center of the line in this photo. You could likely secure the line well with only three such brackets.
You can also see the small line attached to the small canister pipe in this photo near the red arrow.

The photo below has color coded arrows for the connections. You are concerned with the blue arrows for the charcoal canister.

Good luck! Any questions just ask everyone on here, we will help you.

Thank you very much.

About my BUG story.

My dad bought 1972 Beetle 1300 white.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I sometimes borrowed this beetle for driving with my girl friend Smile

My dad was too old to drive him, so sold. then I was too low salary to hold it Crying or Very sad
I decided to buy him again some day.

* No custom, no repaint, original wheels, sterling.......... etc
* White, 1200 or 1300, w/Carburetor & w/Iron dash board

I looked for it about 2-3 years, so I finally found him the end of last year!!

One -owner car and he has full maintenance reports from 1974!!
he has one problem, the 1st gear often pop out. I have to push the gear when I start.

Please see his clock (Watch?). This is japan railway cockpit watch.
It looks good on him, do not you?

Seiya, san, the video was cool. Looks like you were having fun.

Are there many Beetles in Tokyo? I assume not, so you must get quite a few stares when driving around. Maybe there is a VW club?

By the way, do have to do smog checks on vintage cars there?

I'm curious too. It seems there is a cool VW scene in Japan...
