|
|
For those of you that have used POR-15, I have a question about the prep work. In October, I plan on POR'ing my floor pan, the underside. Currently the floor pan is black, and there is minimal surface rust. I was going to sand off the surface rust using sand paper or a wire wheel. Since I don't have much rust I need to get rid of, is there any reason I would need to use the POR-15 METAL PREP? I was going to sand, then use the de-greaser to clean it up.
I wouldn't think I'd need to remove ALL the black finish, just to take it to bare metal. would I? Would the POR-15 Metal Prep be needed for this? _________________ 1963 Ragtop |

you should degrease prior to sanding, as sanding can trap grease in the sand marks, folded over paint, making it resistant to degreasing after sanding. degrease both before and after sanding.

That seems like a lot of work. I have used POR15. It’s good stuff albeit a little on the pricey side.
POR15 has a web site with tech support for their products. I emailed a question to them and had a response within a few hours. That would be my suggestion for your question. _________________ 1960 beetle

My experience with POR15 is that it is not much good over painted metal. POR= Paint over rust.
You are better off removing all of the paint, letting it flash rust, then use POR15 metal prep to remove the flash rust and provide the key then the POR15 paint. Painting over the already painted area may cause the new POR15 to lift off in sheets. POR15 needs the rusty surface to work the best.
Many people have used the KBS equivalents or the Master Series which also gets good reviews.

I'm guessing that in response to any such query, POR's response will be to use their product system as recommended...
You don't want this to happen because you took a sortcut

Try this. I like it better than POR 15

Por15 can go right over bare metal and it works best if it has rust on it. Just remember after Por15 goes down you need to use the Tie coat primer over it before you can paint over it. In other words Por15 is NOT a top coat. Read the Por15 instructions, it will tell you about it's characteristics and the Tie coat primer. |

POR's response was to use the metal prep only on areas that are bare or rusty.
I haven't bought anything yet. I will compare to other products. Looking for the least amount of work since I don't have a whole lot to treat or repair _________________ 1963 Ragtop |
