I'm trying to install a Gene Berg pulley, but tapping it on, it doesn't seem to want to go flush with the end of the crankhaft. It's about 3/16" shy. However, even so, it looks to be prett closely aligned with the generator pulley. Anyone know what's right? Thanks. |

The pulley doesn't fit flush with the end of the crank. _________________ Glenn

If you heat it up to around 200 degrees F it should slip on with little or no tapping if the engine is stone cold...... You don't have much time to dilly dally, Use winter gloves and move fast.

Might be best to speak to GBE direct, they are very helpful and I’ve always had fast delivery (I’m in the U.K. too)
However a lot of Berg stuff is no longer produced or is out of stock which is a great shame. |

Just because Berg has a current ad here on The Samba does not mean they have it in stock. I waited over a year for a power pulley sized equalizer. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I've been trying to get one for almost two years. Allistar at Bergs keeps telling me they are waiting on the forgings, etc. Finally could not wait and went with one of Pat Downs own pulleys. _________________ 1967 Bug (Second owner) |

This is mine, but it's extremely rare and desirable for someone with a performance aircooled VW. I have 1, and can ship in a day or 2. _________________ it's advice. If you don't like it, ignore it. Don't argue.

Thanks Glenn! Riding a lot of mountain bikes and trying to scare myself without crashing too much. Nobody has hit me up for a burger yet either

What's the fascination with the Berg pulley? If it's so hard to come by, anyone with a lathe can turn up a weight. Bolt to a stock pulley then go get it balanced.
In fact if you have a lathe, turn up a pair of cones with a wee set of bearings on the end of the cone shaft and you have a high point balancer for your pulley. Open your vice, set the bearings on top the jaws, get a felt marker and away you go. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

It's just a nice steel pulley.
Aluminum sucks, stamped steel works well but can get bent easily and hard to modify, iron works well but can be brittle, billet steel is the best.
Tho just imo, a good ductile iron pulley would be fine too.
Did empi stop selling steel pulleys?
I compared a berg and an empi, not much difference.
But berg was really tops in thier day. |
