Well Saturday dawned cloudy and chilly.
38° with a slight breeze.

Mr weatherman said mostly sunny morning with highs in the upper 40's......

OK ....... let's do this!

As I left it last night.......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This photo shows how greasy and oil soaked everything is.......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I moved the transaxle out into the yard where the water will drain down and away from it.
Easy to move, just a hand truck and off you go!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I used Simple Green and a plastic brush along with a small wire brush. Imused an old screw driver to dig grease out of the nooks and crannies.

I don't have a power washer but I do have a high pressure nozzle for the garden hose.

It took HOURS picking at that transaxle unit digging out the grease and stones. Scrubbed it with brushes and dug some more.
I used about 1/2 gallon of Simple Green on just the transaxle!

I dug out the hose from Winter storage and got to hosing off the debris.
Despite my attempt to stay dry, you cannot do so. The stream of water always hits something and comes right back at you!

Just began to rinse ......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

All finished!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

On the engine I just sprayed Simple Green on multiple times while I scrubbed the transaxle.
A good hosing off and it is acceptably clean!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This took way longer than I had planned.
The Sun never did show its sunny face but the temperature did creep to 52° for a minute.
It was good getting this done.
By the time I finished and cleaned up time had vanished and I didn't get to the other projects.

The transaxle is in the garage, warm and dry.

Tomorrow calls for a cold rain all day turning to snow.

I brought in kindling and a stack of firewood in preparation.

Well, I'm in the midst of "refreshing" my Automatic transmission.
It didn't make any noises nor did it have operational problems, it just simply leaked massive amounts of ATF despite repeated attempts to seal suspected sources.

My thread on the transmission.......

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=782193

I was delayed by needing a replacement for a broken internal part.
It arrived the other day but with having a life I haven't been able to finish the task.

Today was forecast to be partly Sunny and warm. The rest of thevweek is forecast to be rain.

I decided to use today to do a couple of tasks on the Van itself and utilize the good weather.

I need to install a new Accelerator Cable ......
My thread on replacing the cable.....

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=789667

Remove the axle shafts so that I can refresh the grease in them. There isnt a problem, it is just a good opportunity to repack them while the engine and transmission are removed.

And unkniwn to me this morning...... there is some rust that needs attention.

Well, it was a beautiful Day!

I crawled under and removed both axle shafts that were just hanging there after I pulled the transaxle.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Once removed the greasy axle spindle is subject to dirt and contamination.

I simply folded up a paper towel and mushed it into the grease completely covering it and keeping it clean.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

While I was under the Van I noticed that the shift cable has some serious boot rot.
I'll need to see if I can locate a replacement boot for it ......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I also noticed up in the transmission hump more rust. I've resigned myself to the fact that this unit is going to be a never ending project of cleaning up rust and treating it.
The rust will never be gone, I'm just slowing down the inevitable decay of the chassis and body.

This is the rear seat belt reinforcement plates and the frame in the area of the rear swing arm inner mounting.

I laid under the Van wire brushing away this rust as I was on the phone with Duncan.
He finally asked "What are you doing?" 😂
After I told him he let me know how much easier that would be if I had his transmission area access!

After we hung up I finished the rust scale removal, cleaned the area well and brushed on some Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer being sure to soak any hollows and rusty pits with it.
When we get another warm dry day I'll seam sealer these plates to keep out air and moisture, I'll then put a top coat of paint on this.......

Dave, what's going on here? A crack which grows in width with what looks like a tear in a weld doesn't look good. Hard to tell in the photo. Can't tell what the parts are, but at the very least, couldn't road crud get in there and create more rust and a problem?

Or is it just a shadow from the light source?

That is a strange photo, I honestly don't know if it is right side up or not and it is raining too much to go outside, crawl under and look.
The holes don't look rust created but are welded openings, but I'll need to take another look at it.

It is the rear frame onto which the inner rear wish one mounts ....

The rains have let up for a few hours so I crawled under the Van to better identify the areas Duncan was concerned about.

Here is a better photo of the area I worked on ......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I am pointing at the hole Duncan mentioned, actually the entire assembly is full of holes. Holes either drilled or where they stopped welding leaving the hole intentionally......

No worries here....... I'm structually good, just catching the advancing surface rust before it gets other ideas!

I wouldn’t say that today dawned bright and clear but it is dry enough and warm enough (54°) to slather on some seam sealer over the seat belt reinforcement plates to prevent any future water getting behind them.

Did a little painting but the seam sealer needs to dry a bit before I can paint over it.

Today was Sunny and Warm ..... sadly I also had to work until 1pm.

I had parts waiting to be picked up at BusDepot so the Wife and I took off through the Pennsylvania farmland for BusDepot.

While I understand why BusDepot moved...... their old location was much more fun. Funky location, a more enjoyable and scenic ride too.

I picked up my parts, always polite and friendly and we went out for lunch.

After getting home the day was largely gone....... I crawled under the Van and painted my rust repair areas.
I know it is a sloppy drippy mess but I really don't care, it is the bottom of the Van and the rust has been delayed.

Happily the rust repair that was made easy by not having a transaxle is finished!
I'm ready for reassembly.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I do like these PreVal spray units, they are wonderful for quick touch ups. I top coated with the Single Stage paint I used on the exterior.
The photo has a bottle with epoxy primer in it.
I've another bottle with thinned top coat paint in it.
Just unscrew the spray power head, put it on the bottle you wish and paint

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My unit had the rear heater deleted by a PO.
The PO had just used so thin plastic hole caps and they liked to work loose.
I picked up two 1" rubber expanding freeze plugs. These won't ever fall out!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Removing the engine I had broken a nipple on the original thermostat housing, I picked up a new one from BusDepot.

Interesting, the aluminum ones are the same price as the plastic ones now.
But....
To use the aluminum one you need new screw in senders.
My senders work well plus I have spares already.
While I dislike plastic cooling bits...... I decided to stay with plastic for now....
I picked up some extra ORings for my travel repair kit.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I needed a new differential oil pan gasket too. Plus the front transaxle mount was shot.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And just for fun, I blew $20 on His & Hers keychains.
We had these with the 86 but passed them on to my Brother.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Although it appears that I left chaos and nurder in my wake upon leaving BusDepot!

On the plus side.......
If I had a power train I could cruise!

Well ...... looky looky ........
There is no Van in the repair spot!

It drove away with fresh paint, a renewed interior and a rebuilt automatic transmission.

It goes without saying that there were bugs to work out.

It amazes me how mystifying we as an owners group have made filling and bleeding the cooling system.
Mines all bled, no pumps, no bongs, no steep angles...... just follow the directions.

I had horrible electrical problems with my lights.
I had one rear turn signal, one brake light, no tail lights and no reverse lights.
I popped the bulb holders and found one broken bulb and one burned out bulb.
I started testing each bulb but even with good bulbs and clean contacts I still didn't have everything working!
I was beginning to pull my hair out and finally noticed the issue.

I had a helper putting the Van back together after paint. He had screwed in the Right tail light on the Left and the Left on the Right.

The plugs plugged in and some lights worked..... some didn't.

I swapped them around and Bang! All the rear lights work!

My new Mercedes Benz LED side markers are sweet, highly recommend.

My idle sticks about 2,000 rpm when I let off of the pedal.
This isn't new, the throttle body is worn.
I'm going to order a new one, probably GoWesty's version.
I figure the throttle body not returning to fully closed is killing my gas mileage fir the injectors aren't cutting off on deaccelation as designed.

Leaks?
Sadly just one.
ATF out of the back to back seal weep hole.
I'm hoping the new seal will seat soon..... but I fear I'm just dreaming that it will stop.

Having the accelerator pedal cable and rod adjusted properly certainly delivered a few extra top end ponies! It is noticeable. The ball socket on the transmission lever was rusted on solid. I had to use a cut off wheel in a dremel to carefully cut off the rusted on shell in multiple pieces.
Having full cable and ball/socket movement probably didn't hurt the better performance either.

Friday I'm taking a ride to the Sandy Hook area of New Jersey to see my brother and give the Van a short shake down cruise.

I'll be bringing my pup who hasn't ever ridden in the Van but absolutely LOVES car rides.
He has jumped into the Van a few times to visit while I've been refreshing the unit.
Overall he is a complete wuss and afraid of everything.... but he is still young.

With the new Pergo floor it is quite smooth and slick, I don't want him to slide about and get spooked by his first ride experience.

I found this brown 36x49" rubber backed carpet ribbed welcome mat.
It fit perfectly on the floor space in the side door.

Color me pleased.........

I had been running some digital gauges from Jegs.
They didn't stand the test of time and quickly discolored then literally fell apart!

I picked up these Auto Meter gauges, I'm quite pleased with their fit and function (although the temperature gauge isn't yet hooked up and when it is, it will be for ATF temperature.)

They are also very pleasing to my eye.........

I had to run to the hardware store so I of course took the Van and lingered during the ride.
The weather decided to throw everything at me, Sunshine, black skies, high winds pouring rain and snow.

I revisited places I hadn't been in awhile......
