thanks Jimbo!
its nice to make progress. this one was fun because i can actually call that part complete. most of the things are 80% done. need some touchup. or have a small issue... not this. this is DONE. (ignoring the continuing maintenance or the fact that a canvas roof has a pretty short life span)
sometimes i cant believe how quickly the bug is going together.
other times i look at the pile of parts and cant believe how much there is to do.

been on this forum for a bit over 2 years now. i took a picture of the car that reminded me of the first one i shared with you all.
how it started-
how its going-
ill probably try and recreate a couple of my early pics of the car once i get it driving. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

thanks Jimbo and Antoine!
more progress
cleaned up the gas tank
put the witches hats on. a couple in the door and in back are hard to reach. they glue on. i used e6000 clear.
started fitting the carpet
got the coat hooks on. i put the screws in before the headliner. then installed the headliner over them. it made it easy to find them and poke holes. still a pain but now its good to go.
had to drill out and retap some holes to get the horn in
and then drained the transmission. the stuff that came out was the consistency of cottage cheese...i dont think thats optimal.

Brilliant idea for putting in the screws before the headliner. I did so many headliners for my aircooleds and pontons, but always struggle to find the holes afterwards. |

thanks everyone!
the internet attaboys are great. its helpful for staying motivated. my family is great and supportive but i can only tell them i got a screw loose so many times....
the coat hook screws arent my idea. i got it from some video i watched about how to do a headliner (dont recall the source). super helpful tip though so i figured i would spread their good idea. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

more stuff.
after i drained the gearbox i added some spare fluid i had around. i didnt really think it through. i woke up to a pool of gear oil on the floor. that stuff really stinks. since it didnt drain fully i overfilled it. i ended up having to temp attach the axle boots to keep it from leaking all over the floor.
they are west german. really nice qaulity. its fun using parts from countries that dont exist. feels sacrilegious to open them.
just temp them on. ill attach them for real after the motor is in.
pulled the seats down and started thinking about them.
i have a ton of marine vinyl pieces. im going to throw together some seat covers out of that. i have some fun colors to choose from that fit well with the existing color scheme of the car. never done upholstery so we will see how that goes.
most of the seats i have are from a 1955. they have these papers with the date.
they used to be covered in black nawgahyde.
i think the front seats were converted from a standard or something
i tidied up the truck bed. seems more managible when its more organized.
closer view of the motor parts. still have stuff to gather. there are some place holders.
these things are awfully crusty on the outside but they are perfect on the inside.

me too. im starting simple and will see where it takes me
i pulled the upholstery off the seats. it smelled pretty bad and the pads were shot. this is the best one.
now i have pieces to template off of.
this fabric is sturdy a.f. its going to outlast me.
cleaned up a bilstein jack
tried it out
and put the carpet in the back. i didnt buy enough glue so thats all the carpet so far.
i started talking to a machine shop about getting the case ready. no pictures of that but it feels important. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

got the carpet in today.
cleaned up the luggage rails
spilled contact cement everywhere
had to do some precision measuring and cutting
did a poor job with the precision cutting
made a patch
hooray!
not too shabby
