there were a bunch or pieces i had to take back out to install the carpet. also the choke cable. all that stuff got cleaned up and went back in this week.
here are pretty pictyures
great news about upholstery. my local library has a Makers Space that has some really nice sewing machines. i should have no problem getting this stuff sewn after i get my pieces cut.
so i started blasting
i boxed up the case and mailed it off to california. getting it cleaned up and cut.
it was an "oh shit this is actually happening" moment.

more small stuff.
cleaned up the fuel tap, gave it new seals and filters and put it in. there are two types that are "correct" here. this one and one with a wing nut to tighten it up. if i understand correctly this was the original and the wingnut was the dealer replacement. i also think wingnut would be correct for my 54 truck so i would imagine this type of nut was a rather short lived design.
fixed some dents on the running board. i also had to drill out and retap a couple of the screws that attach to the body. this is basically proof of concept for me and body work. i enjoy percussive repairs.
shift boot. rubber mat... that kinda stuff. i used the fuel tap trim ring for the choke cable. im going to put a ZAR bar on the hole for the fuel tap. i think the original carpet would have had a trimmed u shaped cutout for the choke cable.
throttle link pin. now the pedals are done.
rubber
more rubber
you cant really see...but there is more rubber here. its under the hose. as far as i can tell there are no spec'd clamps for the fuel lines. im adding some. i like to not catch on fire.
rubber
oh wait...more rubber
could it be?
maybe its glass or something
nope. more rubber.
bought some more rubber yesterday. i think this car is like 30% rubber. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

Coming along nicely, if you lived near me, I’d let you go thru my spare parts, for what you need.
Keep it going.

thanks dude! thats awesome of you.
im getting pretty close to being done with major parts. i just keep needing small stuff like a screw or a rubber grommet. most of my remaining stuff are things like tires and bolster pillows. most of the parts uncertainly is in the motor.
regarding the motor-
it made it to california. after inspection the guy (Joe) thought it looked good. it was at original measurements. good to know he thinks its viable. it has some pitting in the bottom that had me concerned.
dude was talking about cutting the case for 77mm pistons to give it a bit more pep while still retaining its original appearance. thats something i hadnt previously considered that is kinda appealing. i have 75mms so id sell them and buy 77s which would probably net me a bit of cash along the way. something to consider. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

Are you having Mr. Okrasa work on your motor? If so, that dude is meticulous and knows his shit!

i am. i am having him clean and cut the block. we are in discussions about him building the long block. i had assumed i was going to build the motor but Joe says some really compelling things. he would build a better motor than me.
it took me a bit to settle on a shop. my preference would be to find someone locally. the local shop didnt have much experience with the early bug motors (mostly 70's stuff). at that point i thought i might as well reach out to someone at the top of the industry. i contacted Joe. we talked for a bit and now he has my case.
im excited. my motor car will have a heart of gold. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

vent window seals are in. they were a pain. took a lot longer than i expected. i bought them from wolfsburg west. the fit isnt great. next time i do this ill try a different company. the were no holes for the latches so i had to cut some. they sit wobbly. everything closes and seals well. ill end up coming back and fiddling with them again later.

thanks guys! sometimes having a hoarder for a parent has its benefits.
that photo is mostly 36hp longblock parts from 1955-1960. also Gus Gus. he came on board a bit over a year ago. hes a natural garage dog (other than a profound love for gear oil)
at this time these parts are not for sale. if that changes ill let yall know.
regarding the parts that i have that are for sale: i list new stuff in the classifieds pretty regularly. i am actively liquidating the parts that do not go to the vehicles i am keeping. want something? make me an offer. if the item is still available and its fair ill say yes. if there is something specific on your wishlist feel free to PM me. i might have it and im happy to take a look. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

here is an interesting little part.
radio cut-off plate.
took a bit for me to discover that this part exists. its not clear from most of the drawings. easy peasy. two screws.
here is another interesting small part.
its a turn signal cancel plate. my initial research tells me its a 1955 only accessory. i think i can make it work with the steering wheel i have. i havent decided if im adding it or not.

bit of a bummer at the end of last week. the case will not be getting built.
here are some pictures (taken by Joe Ruiz)
my understanding from what he said is that the oil sump stud is the big issue. he said the magnesium gets soft and the stud will just snap off.
there was also good news. he has a really nice case that is about a week older than the one i sent him. how fun and exciting. _________________ november 1952 ragtop

thanks! i had a nice moment of self reflection about that. there are a lot of times in the past where the case being shot would have derailed my progress. it might have killed my interest in the project entirely. not this time.
im unsure if i will bother to get that case back. i think i might. maybe make a coffee table out of that one and the damaged 20-numbered 1954 case i have. maybe hang them on the wall...make a key rack? idk. it seems a bit of a waste to not do something cool with them.
on the flip side i could always throw it on a bonfire _________________ november 1952 ragtop

This is a fun thread to follow-while I love full and accurate restorations, your car will probably be like a lot of them were back in the 70s. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and recall seeing a few early 60s Beetles that looked like this, although yours will surely be much cleaner and nicer to drive. Good seeing this preservation. |

thanks! im glad you are enjoying the thread.
i really like the aesthetic of this car. i think painting it would be a tragedy. im trying to be mindful of the next owner. im not doing anything that would complicate a factory restore by a future owner. _________________ november 1952 ragtop
