I'm having problems with my 42mm ( ~1 5/8") CSP Python exhaust. I used the little nuts that came with the system at the head flanges. They keep getting loose and replacing the gaskets requires dropping the engine and disassembling the exhaust. The little nuts take a 10mm wrench and for the forward cylinders I can only get an open-end on them.

I would imagine this is a common problem with larger diameter exhausts. Perhaps someone with experience in this area can offer some advice.

It might be worth looking on CB Performances web site and see if they offer some small copper self locking nuts with an 8mm thread. I know I got some from somebody like them for both my intake manifolds, and a couple of them for the exhaust system.

That's pretty much what I have now.

Looks like what ACN used to sell, I have some of these on one of my cars with no issue.

I'm all T4 though so a bit different than T1 exhaust setup.

I do use washers on the nut side generally, might help to throw a lock washer of some sort under the flange nut?

I think my son is using some brass nuts on his type 4 engine too. They use an 11mm socket to tighten/remove. I think he got them from CIP.

Well, they didn't work for me.

What I'm trying is full-sized nuts and lock-washers. Hacked up a 13mm so I could get some swing on the lower nuts of cylinders 1 and 3.

So this has been a bit of a job. Getting the heater boxes off requires taking off the mustache-bar. This is because of a tiny screw holding a bracket up to the cylinder tin. For that little screw pretty much the entire fan and shroud had to come off.

Before putting the heater-boxes back on, I've cut off that little bracket. More trouble than it's worth.

Tomorrow is stabbing the engine back in the car.

On my Notch, I ground away a little of the weld to clear the stock nut. But on my intake manifolds, I ground the stock welds a little so I could get full purchase on the smaller nuts I used to hold the manifolds on (ground the clearance for the tools I used). It's been a while since I did that though. I ground quite a bit on my aluminum ICT manifolds to do something similar on my spare engine too. Sometimes it's worth it to grind a little beforehand just to make assembly easier. As for that screw that connects the heater box to the engine bar, I just swapped out the screw with a hex head one to make my life easier. I'm not a stock nazi, so it's no big deal to me if it isn't a slotted screw. In fact most of my slotted screws have been swapped to hex head to make my life easier. In fact that one might have been the first to get changed, so I could just remove it with my 1/4 drive ratchet and a 10mm socket. I hope this helps.

Alrighty. Everything is stuffed back in the car. No breakage. Although I did forget to hook up the vacuum hose for the MAP sensor. Runs crummy that way.

All set to drive to lunch w/friends tomorrow and VWs on the Green Sunday up in Littleton. Weather guy says breezy on Sunday. Maybe it will be a tail-wind.
