I have a homebuilt trike that I ride and last year with the help of a friend rebuilt the motor. It is a 1641 sp with a small cam. It runs well but I am having issues with oil leaks. Mostly when I pull the popup camper, I notice a fine oily sooty mist on the front of the camper and it really makes a mess. So I am going back rechecking the motor and this is one thing I think might be contributing . How should a VW engine be vented? What I have is just making an oily mess around it. I would like to add I am not a mechanic just an old guy with a garage that needs a little help. Thanks JohnB

I run a hose down like a draft tube. I zip tie it to my Buggy's rear Baja bumper and cut an angle at the bottom to give something of a venturi effect. A stock engine shouldn't have much case pressure.

You most likely have a ring sealing problem. Those super thin wall 87mm cylinders are known to be about the worst for staying round. I only got 5000miles out of a set before they were egg shaped and the rings wouldn’t seal.

When the rings don’t seal, they leak combustion gases into the case, increase case pressure, and cause the engine to push oil out.

I went back to 85mm cylinders on that engine, properly prepped the cylinders with good rings, and all the problems went away. That engine is still going great after about 12 years now.

You can add some extra venting to a catch can, but that isn’t fixing the problem. Properly seated and sealed rings shouldn’t need huge vents, even on 2332cc engines.

Here are some great examples of how to vent, courtesy of boredpanda.

Instead of that little filter I have a hose going from there up to the air cleaner, just like stock.

Before a committing to more venting, do a leak down test and I’ll bet you that Brian is right and your rings aren’t sealing allowing for the extra crankcase pressure.

The stock vent is plenty for a 1640,theres other issues somwhere as in the rings not sealing, broke ring etc.

One problem i see is having a filter on the vent location,it has been misting oil out that filter so the filter probaly is soaked with oil and blocked or partially blocked, the vent hose should go to the aircleaner,if i was you id take that filter off and not put a filter there just put a rubber hose on the vent and run it to the aircleaner or route it down and let it open or put some screen in it,i know they sell those filters for vents, etc but the only way they work is if ya keep them clean blowing them out with compressed air regularly but yours has to be oil soaked and partially blocked and that alone can build up case pressure.

When you rebuilt the engine which way did you put the Louvered plate under the gen/alternator stand? If its in the wrong way oil flung off the crank will fill the stand a bit and it will vent more oil.

Take off your oil filler and reposition it so the outlet tube is at the top towards the shroud as best you can. If you look inside the cap there is a cut out for the vent area. As you have it positioned in the photo the oil will block the vent hole when it is positioned downward on your particular oil filler.
