I have a Brazilian bus coming with this roof mounted light.
Is it common to any other buses or maybe just a Brazilian item.
I see items listed on the German wiring diagrams but could not find this exact light. Looks like a F9 locomotive.

The experts will chime in, but I believe the factory wiring diagram shows a lighted ambulance, police, or fire logo light... or possibly a spot mounted on mirror? DO know that the light in your pic is not VW, and is usually a 1930 - 40s fender headlight mounted on a bus roof.
EDIT:
this is the 'logo light'
this is what the spot/mirror looks like

Hey, how about all the lights?

Thanks. I don’t know what it is until the bus arrives this week. We like locomotives and will likely keep it. I will see how well the curvature fits to understand if this was something they had on Brazilian buses or something custom as you suggest. Maybe what is on the electrical drawings is a light/mirror fixed mounted in late 50s early 60s. _________________ http://karmannghias.org/

Certainly not Brazilian specific. These have been added to Buses for many years by previous owners. Your new Bus is just part of the trend. I too, like the look. _________________ Roads Scholar

It’s a headlight from a 1946 Chevrolet truck. Yes looks cool no not a rare VW option like is mentioned in Rust Valley Restoration shop. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

I don't know Kombi Garage, the history of police vans in Germany, everything VW... or much of anything, really. I do know that a quick image search of polizei van germany brazil police 1950s 1960s turns up approximately zero images of a van, VW or not, with that light on it.
Pics of actual examples would be welcomed and corrections made, as we all learn something new every day.
The important thing is this: do YOU like it? If yes, it matters little whether it's a VW police accessory, a Ford fender light, or a trumpet with a light bulb in it. Enjoy it! No need to invent backstories, if that's what people who sold these have been doing. People did all kinds of crazy crap to VWs, and they are free to continue to do so. Just be prepared for some comments :) _________________ Craig K

That’s what he told me from Brazil. I don’t know what the Brazil police use, it’s just what he told me so I related it. Picture of their shop when our bus was being finished. I’ve seen about 4 of this light installed so must be a Brazil thing.

For the record I like them.
I wouldn’t do it but if I bought a bus with one on I’d leave it.
Do three things to learn more about these lights than you ever wanted to know but were too afraid to ask.
1. Read this
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=500262&highlight=cyclops
2. Search cyclops lights
3. Google early American Ford, Chevrolet, and GMC trucks specifically circa early 40’s
Enjoy your bus with or without the light it’s your bus but like mentioned above don’t regurgitate incorrect information because there are people who know A LOT more about these cars than I do and I have been searching for buses since the mid 80’s. Most won’t say anything to you at a show but we will for sure laugh at you and talk about you behind your back over beers.
Also I would have to say that I think it was a UK thing and got started over there. They are a bit more bold with custom mods on buses. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

Perhaps shopping at KOMBI garage was unwise. I mean if they missed that, what else did they not know?

They look stupid mounted on a bus and we hate them.

Couldn't agree more! People, stop putting 1940's GMC truck headlights on the roofs of your Buses... they look awful _________________ My Beetles :

There are those who disagree with your opinion - see above.
I like the look and they are probably somewhat functional. I would not put one on my Buses but if it came with one but I like my Buses as stock as I can get them so I would not install one. _________________ Roads Scholar

These cyclops lights are completely illegal in Germany. Reason being, that you could be mistaken for a locomotive.
The three point light scheme is reserved for locomotives in Germany. Every locomotive has them over here. |
So they would be acceptable on these Buses?

More reason to put one on my bus along with one of those extremely loud train horns. Gotta keep the jacked up loud ass no muffler trucks in my community on their toes you know. _________________ Never argue with an Idiot. They'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

In theory yes. I don't know why they didn't add it to this one. Other Klv of similar size do have the three lights.
Also most of the dual use vehicles like Unimogs have the three lights for on track and other two light for on road. _________________ - Michael

To each their own I guess.
I don't particularly like the look of the barndoor fresh air scoop for the same reason. From a design standpoint, it just appears stuck up on the roof as an afterthought. IMO it ruins the clean aesthetic lines of the split window front nose. _________________ WANTED:
