|
|
I just registered my '86 Westy in Salt Lake City, Utah. The fee (tax) this year was $69.50 which was up $20 from last year. With the $40 for the emissions and safety inspection it came to a total of $109.50.
How much do you pay to register you 20+ year old vans in other states? |

Just got my registration and tags for 2010. Went from $57.00 in 2008 to $70.00 in 2009.
Im sleeping well though as I know that the money will make for better roads sometime in the year 2045

initial registration for my rusty '87 syncro with 265,000 miles was $377. they get you on the sales tax. they charge you on what they think its worth, not what you actually paid...and since they consider any '87 vanagon a vintage collectable car i got raped.
massachusetts makes up some of the most asinine laws in existence to screw the little guy out of every hard earned dime he makes. i hate this state. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

Are you talking registration fees or taxes or both? I don't what it's like in other states, but in CT we pay property taxes on motor vehicles each year to whatever municipality (town or city) our vehicles are registered. I can't remember, but I think my property tax is about $15 or $20 each for my Wolfsburg and Westfalia Vanagons.
Then when we first purchase and register our vehicles, we pay 6% sales tax on the bill of sale value, unless that amount is less than the Blue Book value.
Once every two years we pay about $75 for registration fees.

It would have been $72 if it was a van body. Since I am driving a truck there is a additional $24 weight fee. |

My 91 Carat is $75 dollars base registration, up eight I believe from last year, and a $60 dollar SMOG every two years, so that makes it an average of approx $105 a year, assuming you have to smog every two years.. _________________ 1990 Vanagon Carat-SOLD

we have government insurance here, and I hate any kind of long term contracts, so I buy the minimum term of insurance I can get which is three months, I dunno maybe $400 because I get a %40 discount since I am such a GOD of driving.
registration and fees and whatnot? chump change. It cost $50 for 50 litres just 10 minutes ago, so whatever. _________________ Tencentlife said,

The cheapest of the three: $3.03 in tax and $26 for registration. No emissions test or safety test of any kind. Everything smokes and nothing is safe.
Kentucky- as free as it gets in the USA. _________________ Current fleet: Vanagons, two '88 GLs and an 89 Bluestar. Beetles, '63, '64, '72 convertible. Plus, four Subarus and three Prius. Too many cars. |

In King County (Seattle) when we buy - if it is a new you pay sales tax - 8.8-9.8% depending where you live. Used vehicles pay the same rate, but they call it a "use tax" - that way they can collect a "sales" tax no matter how many times any single vehicle is sold.
We use to pay yearly registration fees based on a value code - but that got repealed so now it is a flat $35 per year - but thats not enough for our crappy roads and congestion so now we pay and additional $40 RTA Tax plus other fees and crap: So my yearly total is about $95 with an emissions test ($15) every two years.
When you buy you really get screwed - Use tax, transfer tax, title fees, emissions test, registration fees and tax, and on and on.....Plus to mention I think we have the 3rd or fourth highest gas tax in america! About 56% per gallon (federal and state combined) I know California is even higher but their overall fuel costs are the same or lower. _________________ '89 Westy - EJ25/22 Frank 4.44 5mt

P.S. - For me, up $20 to $56.71. _________________ Steve - Tampa Bay Area

that is calculated from NOK to dollar using the Norwegian bank's on-line calculator. All those taxes varies depending on the vehicle, i calculated for a vanagon. Road tax is a little higher for a diesel. Most of them get higher the newer the vehicle.
For comparison: For a new basic T5 7 seater the registration tax is 37 250$, about a forth for a 3 seat commercial van. Road tax is 492$. These are calculated by customs from a lot of factors like weight, emissions etc...
Oh, and gas is 8,37$ per gallon, diesel 7,57$ per gallon. _________________ 1990 syncro 1.6TD "Smily"

my tabs cost about $50 a year. my truck is an '85 so I just did my last emissions test on it (in WA anyway)
I'm fine with this cost.
it's been near 5 years with it so not shure what it was to transfer the title but seems to me it was in the $250 range ? |

Only $10 for my '84 here in Hawaii. I was shocked, because my other vehicle costs much more. Must be the age. _________________ Wherever you go....there you are! 1984 Westfalia Full Camper |
