I was 100% dialed in looking for the middle seat. I forgot that the bus didn't have a rear bumper. It was blind luck!
Thanks Everett! |

You were on a mission, the place was so overgrown it was crazy. I called out to you several times to check in with no response...
Finding that rear bumper was worth the trip in itself, we were happy just to find that. Then we started looking around nearby and scored some early 64 Turkish split bus front doors with all the glass, rear hatch with glass and engine lid.
Found a high hinge Mango right cargo door, cleaned up nice. Needs some Burlyhammer hinge love...

I moved it to the other side of the shop
I’m going to get back on it this winter. I’m deep into another project at the moment, but plan to get back to this one ASAP.
Thanks |

The winter is almost over (I hope) and I still haven’t touched this bus other than using it for a storage shed. I am getting close on the other project I’m currently working on so I will get back on this one soon. I was reading a thread about a stuck door this morning and remembered that I never got the passenger side door opened. I had an extremely difficult time getting the driver’s side door open and put the passenger side one on the back burner. I welded the bracing in from underneath and over the bulkhead because the door was stuck. This morning after reading the other thread I came back out and decided to fiddle with it for a minute. I sprayed some more penetrating oil on the latch mechanism and poked/tapped the pieces that are supposed to move. After a few minutes I got it open!
Progress is progress. I’ll take it!!! |

Ok so once I got the door to open, closing was the next step. I lubed the hinges, and removed the latch mechanism. This rod was in sad shape.
I cleaned and lubed the latch. I replaced the rod with one I had and reassembled:
I put it all back together and now the door opens and closes for the first time in a very long time. I posted a short video on Instagram.

So I got home last night, and this was in the driveway:
We are getting ready for winter in Maine right now. The leaves are falling and the mornings are chilly. It won't be long before the snow flies. That being said, I have a good idea what I'm going to be doing this winter:
AH Schofield makes some nice parts (Thanks for the new issue of Hayburner!!!) I am looking forward to getting back on this beast.

Two years and a month since this thread has been updated. The bus has been a permanent fixture in my shop the whole time. We have piled stuff in it, and piled stuff on it. We have moved it and shook it. The only thing we have not done is work on it. There are a few other projects here that have suffered similarly. I have high hopes that we can make some major headway this winter. My son will be working with me to move these projects forward. We are working toward starting an actual business, and I am hoping this will motivate us to make it happen.
I emptied out all of the crap that I had stuffed into this bus, and removed the wooden bracing from the rear shelf and started digging in:
It's pretty nasty. I had to stop because I ran out of cutting wheels. Luckily swiss cheese cuts easy.

Yessss me too! Alan Schofield parts are on their way to the Greenbush Resto Lab as you read this. I will add some much needed extraction info and pix when I can find a moment. Dave is the man
For now a teaser ---

It's been a minute since this thread got an actual update. A lot has happened since the bus was worked on last, but it was not forgotten. The bus got moved around a few times and became a storage shed, dust collector, conversation piece, etc... Now its's got a spot in our new shop and ready for some attention.
The rear end is basically a rusty shell, and I noticed the belt line was no longer straight. I jacked it up and leveled it to get it close. Once some of the main components start to go back in, we will straighten it out a little more. So far we emptied it out and started removing the rear wheel wells:
More to come. It will be nice to see this one move forward! |

This is a great project, good to see you working on it again!
I've re-read the whole thread and considering the condition of the chassis and some other parts, it's suprising how much original paint there still is on this bus. So far you've managed to do only very minimal repairs, so you might be able to save around 80% of the original paint and metal which would be awesome. Nice to see the rear hatch and the engine lid are still with the bus as well. |
