Sounds like you're out driving the car and doing "running repairs" on it to make it more enjoyable.
As for the sunroof seals, they're mostly "wind seals" and don't keep the water out. That's what the drain tubes are for. One of the first things I worked on with my Notch was to repair the sunroof drain pan (was rusted out in sections), and replace the drain tubes front and rear.
On my wife's Fastback, I replaced the stationary window seals with used pop out seals that I got from a guy in Ohio (this was before ISP had them available). They were complete, and now I have a set of spare glass for them. Always good to have spare parts when you're so far away from California. The pop outs were the one thing that she wanted me to put back in the car, after she drove it one summer.
Between the sun roof and the pop outs in my Notch, I love having both.
It's good to hear that you're driving the car, and fixing the little things, as that's how you enjoy it. Getting rid of any rattles and things are always good.
As for painting the elky, your wife just wants it to happen, so she looks good driving it.
It's good to hear you're still around and driving your Fastback. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Oh yeah, always lurking. any chance i can get, i drive the Fastback. this weekend i have to replace the flywheel, i had a chipped tooth on the std weight one and since it was just a plain cast flywheel , that led to more teeth going away... so, out comes the motor to replace the flywheel with a CB performance forged lightened one.
and if that isnt enough.... of course the "while im in there's" start to rear their ugly heads... so i ordered the new rear subframe bushings, as i have had the old ones in there with washers for spacers to get the modified swingaxle with irs pockets subframe to make the engine sit where it is needed so i can get the bellows on.... that was a mouthful. and of course ... its time for shocks... so off come the Coil overs, readjust the torsions, and on will got the Gas-a-just's.
lastly , I went ahead and figured it was time as the passenger front brake hose is wet around the fittings, to replace them with braided stainless brake hoses , I've heard this goes a long way to making the brakes feel quite a bit more firm, not that i have noticed any pedal feel issues recently. lastly , once all this is done.. time for new rubber out back. tires look like slicks so time for a new pair of 205 70 r15's... i realized a couple of weeks ago that i actually have 205 65's on right now... while they have been fine. I need a little more sidewall to get my rpms down at speed. currently 70mph is 3600 rpm... it used to be closer to 3400 with the worn out transmission, and Steve "Clatter" did such a great job on it I don't want to touch it.
in work news , the ICON VW pistons are really becoming a hit. we now carry revmaster barrels for the 94 and 92's (92's are thick walled with 94mm registers). 90.5's A's and B's are on the way.. as well as revmaster 85.5 and 90.5 barrels in the works. If anyone who's reading this has a set of ICON's, THANK YOU. we have worked really hard to give the community a quality high performance product at an affordable price.
next upgrade on the list is the rear disc kit, which i may have by the time the season is up lol. which is fine because I've been working on my garage since late this last winter... I dont have heat out there and i have finally had it.... so we'll be putting in a ceiling , tape/texture and paint and installing a heater so i can finally go out and work on the car in the winter , or reload ammo... etc. I hate that the garage is only usable 6 months out of the year.
I know I say this every time.. but i will actually try to take pictures while working on Donald this time. try to have some proof i actually do things _________________ If you have any questions about Forged ICON 4032 VW pistons just shoot me a line. |

Good to hear you're still working on it. I'm spoiled living in southern California, but even still, I can appreciate not wanting to work in a freezing cold environment.
Post some pics!! |

last weekend ... got plenty done. but still more to do. when it came to reindexing the springplates i went two outer splines on the driver side and fought it to get it back in place only to discover... thats way too frick'n high.. so i will back it off 1 spline and hopefully should end up just about perfect.. install the shocks and new brake hoses and should be good to go..
let me just be very honest here... i hate adjusting rear spring plates... mainly cause i havent done them enough... running coil overs out back for so long i was able to get away without any adjustments.
so hopefully tonight when i get home i can blast it apart and put it back together and be at the "right" ride height im looking for. _________________ If you have any questions about Forged ICON 4032 VW pistons just shoot me a line. |

Saturday after mowing the lawn and some honey-do's I got around to setting the ride height correctly.. back to 1 outer spline and the ride height ended up being perfect. Installed the new KYB's out back , and took Donald for a spin. this is going to sound rediculous ... but keep in mind I have a tendency to put things off thinking everything is fine. with the bushings for the rear subframe, new rear shocks I have never experienced a smoother ride in Donald than i had on saturday afternoon. he felt like a newer car with how he was riding.
I got back to the house and noticed the distinct smell of burning oil... great... wonderful. well it turns out i didn't have the filler neck tube clamped at the top... and this is going to sound odd... but it started sucking oil from the filler into the cooling duct then blowing it all over the top of the motor... even had oil coming from the mating halfs of the inner fan housing. Great so thats fixed right? but wait there is more! as if that wasnt enough.. the rear mainseal wasnt doing its job.. so drip drip drip out of the rear main.
So , the engine has to come back out. ordered a new rear main seal, and new KYB's for the front now. after the engine gets cleaned and put back in i will adjust the front again. going to raise the front by one outer spline. since after some reading it looks like it changes the front height by 2 inches instead of 2.5 on the inner splines. so i should still have a slight rake... but now the tires wont touch so bad in the front.
this next weekend I am going camping with the family so no work will get done , i should be able to get it done the following weekend before i have to fly out to to Indiana to meet up with one of our major Professional engine rebuilders we supply. hopefully when i get back I can take the fastback for a nice drive. Time for some throttle therapy. _________________ If you have any questions about Forged ICON 4032 VW pistons just shoot me a line. |

what the FUCH!
15X6 fuchs in my shed now waiting for rubber, the rear disc brake kit and front rotors, which should be showing up soon. Based on everything i can find, the Rivera's im running now are et 17... and with a 205/70/r15 they rub really bad in the back... the 15x6 fuchs are a et35 with puts the outside of the rim 3/4 of a inch back with the same size rear tires... which will be better than perfect.
the rear disc kit i ordered with the cast caliper mounts is supposed to not add offset to the rear, so hopefully that is the case. while i am in the rear end... new irs axle bearings will be installed, honestly .... though i cleaned and re-packed the rears 5 years ago when i put him back together... im pretty dang sure those were original bearings. they still spun nice and didnt have any perceptable bad spots... so they have done their part and its time for them to be retired, this is also me hoping i wont have to get back into those bearings again, but we'll see.
I will try to document the installation and have final pictures. when i do this but we all know how terrible i am at remembering. the 2110 has been doing great with Clatter's transmission. i can do 70mph at 3300 rpm, and the engine oil stays below 200F for highway cruising. while climbing Carson pass (hwy 88 over 8k alt) 65-70 mph up and over... (ill have to check the gradient to give you guys an idea but its pretty steep for a normal pass , but oil temps touch 220 at most. so i am really happy with how this lil stroker is doing. did an oil change, checked the filter, and everything seems happy , no stripper glitter in the filter or oil, rockers have held there adjustment and such so ... im really happy with this engine.
This will be the last of the major upgrades... after this i just want to drive it. and its time to build up the stash for the 87 El Camino rebuild/repaint. hopefully posting soon! _________________ If you have any questions about Forged ICON 4032 VW pistons just shoot me a line. |
