That's way more interesting than the video about how put your pulley belt on with the engine running.

Done that many times myself. The trick when prying it on is to force the bead down into the channel of the rim by standing on the tire for the last bit. However, most of the time with VW tires, you don't need to resort to the "fire" method. Just removing the valve core and sending a blast of air down the valve will be enough to seat it.

My mechanic did it free but I always leave him a good tip Wink
The cool thing is I learned about the tire machines with the 4 grippers and I will also use it for my other vintage car.
Thanks for all the help.

You can 'feel' an unbalanced tire at the helm.... Confused

On buses, I don't bother unless I can feel something while driving. I just mounted four Cooper Discoverers and I can feel no out of balance issues all the way up to 70 MPH. This is the second set of these tires I have had on a bus with no balancing.

Simple speculation:

I would assume that the side-wall grade would make a bit of a difference... the BFG D's on my Vanagon were balanced, but I have felt nothing while in these shoes.

(I may be interested in selling it, it's in my Gallery, but I have yet to commit... Rolling Eyes )

The BFG's:

195/75R 14" BFG's, Load Range: 'D'

What Load Rating are your tires?

I did not have him balance the spare and it s a used tire (for now) but when I swap it back I'll have him balance just in case I need it. Thanks guys.

Next wheel problem, this is the wheel I swapped out with the spare, I read somewhere the hubcap clips are riveted in how do I remove the old rivit without damaging the wheel and once I buy new clips I am assuming they include a rivet which I know how to apply. Thanks again, making progress everyday.

Drill the rivet out from the backside of the rim. Be careful not to make the hole too big.I use a 1/8" bit, which is smaller than the rivet, but once drilled I use a small center punch to drive the old rivet through the hole.

I also grind the back of the rivet flush with the wheel to get rid of the mushroomed part of the rivet. Sometimes that is enough to make the rivet come out without drilling. Don't overdo the grinding, just remover the rivet mushroom.

You need a special rivet tool to install the factory rivets. I don't bother with that anymore, but I built a tool for it years ago. Now, I just use a small screw and a nylock nut. Works perfect every time, it can't be seen with the hubcap on, and if a clip breaks, it's much easier to replace.

Lots easier (and no risk of drilling off center) to either use a small chisel to chop off the rivet head or use a dremil cutting disc to do this if worried about slipping with the chisel and hitting nicely painted rims.
Then pin punch out the rivet remains.

See 1963-67 Workshop Manual, section B-10, page 3.

Anyone know if modern (or older) tire mounting machines can mount the tire onto the rim with the beauty ring installed?

I bought this adapter for the tire shop to balance my tires. https://www.cagero.com/en/prod/Various/Tools/Works...amp;n=323.

Does anyone know if you can use the M12x1.5 lug nuts to hold the VW wide five rims or do you have to use M14x1.5?

Since beetle rims can be put on a type 2 and visa versa, it does not matter which lug bolts you use in a tire adapter.
